Cold Night

After rain last night here in Stowe, VT we picked up a few inches of snow today. Also, temps will be below 0 by morning in VT with wind chills around 20 below. In Boston winds will continue to usher in colder air tonight and wind chills will be in the single digits by morning. Thursday will be a cold and windy day, but temps will rebound with a rain shower or 2 on Friday. Also, the weekend will again be above normal and stay tuned for my first night timeline.

Hi From VT!

We are away skiing in VT for a few days and will also receive mainly rain with this next storm. The storm will pass to the west of the area and will deliver windswept rainstorm. Temps on Wed. will crash throughout the day along with a gusty wind. Temps will be around normal to end out the week.

Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas everyone and thanks for checking out my blog. I hope everyone is having a happy holiday season. As for the weather a few snow showers are possible tonight-not amounting to much. The next storm will arrive late Tuesday into Wednesday and it looks like rain again.

Monday: We head to VT for vacation! Becoming Sunny and windy. High 42. West wind 10-20 MPH with gusts to 30 MPH.

Holiday Weekend

Saturday will be a cold day with a flurry possible, but dry in most areas. Christmas will be closer to 40 with snow showers possible overnight Sunday night. Still, there are no major snowstorms in sight at this point.

Christmas Eve: Fine flying for Santa! Clear with lows around 20.

Mainly Rain

It now appears that the cold air will not come in quick enough for the rain to change to all snow in Boston. However, there is still a chance for some wet snowflakes to mix in before ending by mid morning. Then, the rest of the holiday weekend will be mainly dry and cold.

Snow Friday

Thursday will be another warm day with sunny skies and temps in the 50's. A storm will then ride up the coast and give us a shot of snow Friday morning. Ocean effect snow showers are possible on Christmas eve, with a coating of snow possible. Also, at this point the Christmas nor'easter is off-heading too far south.

Tonight: Winter arrives at 1230 AM tonight! Scattered showers this evening, then partial clearing late. Low 47. Winds turn NW at 15-20 MPH.

Thursday: A mix of sun and clouds and warmer. High 53. West wind of 15-20 MPH.

Thursday night: Increasing clouds until 4 AM, then rain mixed with wet snow. Lows in the low 30's.

Friday: Snow until 10 AM, then partial clearing. Highs in the upper 30'.s Total snow amounts around an inch.

Saturday: Scattered snow showers and snow squalls. Highs in the low 30's. A coating or so is possible.

Christmas Day: Watching a coastal storm-this point out to sea. Highs in the mid 30's.

Rain Wednesday

A storm will pass to the west of us on Wednesday, leading to another rain event. Thursday will be the pick of the week with sunny skies and warm temps. A weak storm may give us some rain or wet snow early Friday with no accumulation expected. A powerful storm is expected on Christmas day-stay tuned as we get closer.

Wednesday; Cloudy in the morning, then rain showers in the afternoon. High 52. South wind of 10-15 MPH.

Stormy Pattern

After another sunny day on Tuesday a weak low pressure will give us some rain showers on Wednesday. Thursday will be a cold and dry day setting the stage for some mix on Friday, but it favors mainly rain at this point. Another more powerful storm is possible Christmas eve.

A warm front will cross the area tonight leading to warmer, but windy Monday. Tuesday will be another quiet day and it will be less windy. A weak weather system will come into the area on Wednesday-and again it will be rain.

A Winter Weekend

Cold air will come into the area leading to a cold weekend. Also, winds from the north will create some ocean effect snow showers late Saturday along the coast. It is hard to pin down exactly where they will set up, but it favors SE MA. Also, some flakes are possible in Boston with little accumulation expected. Sunday will be the coldest of the season with temps struggling to reach freezing.

Headed Home

I am headed home for the Holidays on Friday and it will be a sunny, but windy day. Cold air will then come in for the weekend, along with a chance for snow. Cold NE winds will go over the warmer waters, leading to some ocean effect snow showers.

A storm system will come in from the west and deliver rain showers to the area on Thursday. Behind the system temps will fall along with a gusty wind. Then, the coldest air of the season will come in for the upcoming weekend.

Back to Normal

Tuesday will be another sunny day with temps near normal. Then, A cool front with just a band of clouds will come thru overnight, leading to a colder Wednesday. With the cold air in place a storm will come in from the west on Thursday and it may start out with some brief ice. However, warm air will quickly overtake the area and change it to rain.

Storm Update

Rain has fallen during the day today and will continue into the night. Eventually, enough cold air will come in behind the system for a brief period of snow before precip comes to and end. Most of the day on Thursday will be chilly and windy, but sunny. Cold and quiet conditions will last thru the weekend.

Multiple low pressures will ride along the front stalled over the area delivering heavy precip over the next 36 hours. Rain will continue off and on thru the night and into Wednesday. Heavy rain will come back into the area Wednesday night and as temps cool rain will slowly switch to wet snow. Cold air will continue into the weekend.

Unsettled Times

A storm will slide along a front tonight and early Tuesday giving us some rain showers. Temps will remain warm, before falling on Wednesday. Then another storm will pass just south of the area Wednesday night into Thursday morning, and with colder air coming into the area some snow is likely.

A Nice Weekend

High pressure will dominate the weather this weekend, but Saturday will be closer to normal. Winds will switch to the SW on Sunday, bringing in the warmer air. The next storm will wait until early next week-and it will be rain again.

Warmest on Record!

This fall-September thru November has been the warmest on record in Boston with an average temp near 58. Overall, November 2011 was the second warmest on record in Boston, but was the warmest on Blue Hill. Now, a cool front will come thru on Friday leading to a colder Saturday. Only to warm up once again on Sunday.

Amazing Warmth

So far, November 2011 is the second warmest on record with temps 4.6 degrees above normal! A potent storm will come in from the west and give us rain Tuesday night. After the storm passes, cooler air will come in. But that is just bringing us back to normal in this warm pattern. I don't see any true cold any time soon as warm temps will continue for the first several days of December.

SPECIAL: 2011-12 Winter Forecast

This is my blog preview of the winter ahead. Last winter we had a blizzard blitz-from Christmas to Groundhog day, with at least a storm per week. The snow total for the season ended up double than normal-with about 80 inches total. The data this year supports fewer nor'easters-but still above average snowfall. I get this data from multiple sources online and this is my best estimate. This winter for each storm I will predict snowfall totals for the immediate Boston area.

Storm Update

A powerful storm will pass just south of the area on Wednesday leading to a windswept cold rain in the Boston area. However, north of Concord, NH 8-12+ inches of snow will fall. So, leave extra time to reach your destination if your headed up north. In the Boston area the precip may end as some wet snowflakes in the afternoon as colder air comes around the storm-but it won't stick. It should be a dry and chilly Thanksgiving Day-before another warmup for the weekend.

s in effect from Concord, NH and points north. Some spots may pick up a foot or more of snow.

Tonight: Heavy rain overspreads the area. Near steady temp around 42. East wind of 15-20 MPH.

Wednesday; Heavy rain in the morning, then rain showers possibly mixed with wet snow in the afternoon. Windy with temps around 45 in the morning, will fall to 36 by 5 PM. NE wind of 15-25 MPH with gusts to 40 MPH. Total rainfall between 1.5 and 2.5 inches expected.

Rainstorm Wednesday

A powerful storm will come in from the SW and cross right thru the area on Wednesday. Heavy rain will fall-especially in the morning, before tapering off in the afternoon. Clearing will come into the area for Thanksgiving day, but it will be chilly and windy.

Alerts: A Winter Storm Watch is in effect for Northern New England-including here at PSU. 6+ inches of snow is likely there.

Thanksgiving Week

A cold front will come thru the area tonight with little moisture. However, it will bring in colder air for the start of the week. The next storm will arrive late on Tuesday and last thru Wednesday. This is a mostly rain event for Southern New England-with snow confined in the northern mountains. I'm hopeful it will clear out for Turkey day, but it will chilly and windy.

Tonight: Partly cloudy with a low of 38.

Monday: A mix of sun and clouds and colder. High 45. NE wind of 10-20 MPH.

Monday night: Mostly cloudy with lows in the low 30's.

Warmer Weekend

Chilly Friday

Cold air will continue to come into the area overnight leading to a freeze. So, watch out for some slippery spots first thing Friday. The afternoon will end up being normal along with a gusty wind. Over the weekend the wind will switch to the SW-leading to a warmup.

Snow Thursday?

After the rain comes to an end this evening, temps will fall into the 40's by morning. Then a weak system will come thru late in the day on Thursday. As that happens, colder air will be rushing in and the raindrops may switch to snowflakes before ending-no accumulation is expected. Then, another cold but sunny day is in store for Friday. It will warm up again for the weekend.

Tonight: Showers this evening, then scattered showers after midnight. Low 48.

Thursday: Cloudy until 2 PM, then rain showers possibly mixed with wet snow. Temps near 48 in the morning will fall to 40 by dusk. NW wind of 10-20 MPH.

The mild stretch will continue for another day on Tuesday, but there will be a front in the area with a chance of a shower. Then, Low pressure will ride along the front giving us a cooler rain on Wednesday. After that, colder air will come in for the end of the week.

A Dry Weekend

Happy Veterans day everyone and a big thanks to all the vets. The wind will still be gusty on Saturday, but it will be dry as the storm moves further away. Sunday will be the pick of the weekend with warmer temps and a lighter wind. Temps will once again be above average early next week. There are no major storms in sight.

Rain Thursday

A cold front will come in from the west leading to showers. Also, the front will bring moisture up the coast from TS Sean leading to downpours in the afternoon. TS Sean currently has winds of 65 MPH, and is a threat to Bermuda. So, The circulation of Sean will stay way offshore, so the wind wont be a big issue. However, it will be windy on Friday as the cold air comes in from the west briefly. But, temps will rebound again this weekend.

Tropical Storm Sean

Tropical Storm Sean has formed today about 400 miles SW of Bermuda. While the core of the storm will stay out to sea, some moisture will be drawn northward into New England on Thursday. This will lead to periods of heavy rain. Other than that, the weather pattern will remain quiet with temps going up and down.

Indian Summer

Warmth will continue to come into the area over the next few days. The warmest day of the stretch will be Tuesday with temps soaring to near 70 in some areas. Wednesday will also be nice as temps will rise well above normal -which is about 55. Then, an area of weather of the Carolina coast may become Tropical or Subtropical Storm Sean and then ride up the coast and give us heavy rain late Thursday.

Tonight: Clear with a low of 45.

Tuesday: A great day with mostly sunny skies and sea breeze. Highs near 64 in Boston, 67 in JP and 70 inland. SE wind of 10-20 MPH.

Tuesday: Clear with lows around 50.

Wednesday: A mix of sun and clouds with highs in the mid 60's.

Thursday: Watching what may become Sean ride up the coast! Rain likely with highs around 60-stay tuned!

Set Clocks Back

At 2AM on Sunday morning daylight savings time ends-so it is time to set clocks back an hour. We gain an hour in the morning, but lose the sun earlier in the afternoon. The weather will be sunny this weekend, with temps near 50 on Saturday and then 60 on Sunday. Snow has fallen at intense rate -especially in Central and Western MA. Totals over 2 feet are being reported! Closer to Boston it now appears that several inches of snow will fall. The worst of storm is yet to come-with heavy snow and strong wind gusts to 60 MPH possible.

Nor'easter update

Rain has started to fall in Boston this afternoon as the wind has picked up. Temps have started to fall as snow has mixed in west of 128. Temps will continue to fall and rain will gradually mix with snow by this evening and eventually change to all snow by midnight. Snow totals are tough because of the warm ground and the rain, but a few inches in Boston is likely, with more to the west. Winds will continue to pick up and gusts may reach 60 MPH, and this will cause widespread power outages.

October Nor'easter

A powerful storm will ride up the coast and give us an early season snowstorm. The latest track sends it near the sweet spot for usual snow events. But, because of the warmer ocean temps winds off the water will cut down on snow totals along the coast-including the city. However, a slight shift NW or SE could change snow totals. Also, winds may gust to 60 MPH in the Boston area leading to widespread power outages. This storm will break records up and down the east coast, with more than a foot of snow possible in some places.

A Winter Storm Warning is in effect NW of 495.

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect closer to the city.

A High Wind Watch is in effect for the coast-including Boston

A Coastal Flood Warning is in effect for major coastal flooding along the shore.

Weekend Nor'easter?

After our first flakes in many places tonight temps will continue to fall to freezing in Boston tonight. Friday will be sunny and chilly with highs in the mid to upper 40's. Then, a powerful storm will come up the coast and if it comes close enough could cause major problems. Today the models have shifted closer to the area with the potential of a major WINTER STORM Saturday afternoon into the night. Stay tuned more details over the next day or so!

First Flakes

A potent system will effect the area on Thursday. It will start out as rain in the morning, and slowly turn to snow from NW to SE. The snow will have a hard time sticking to pavement and the roads, but a small accumulation on the grass and cars are possible. October Snow!

A weak system will come thru on Wednesday with a couple of rain showers. A more potent system will effect the area on Thursday. It will start as rain in the morning, but as cold air comes down from the north, rain will gradually change to snow. Even in Boston a coating on the grass and cars are possible overnight Thursday. A nor'easter is possible this weekend with more snow.

Boston, MA forecast:

Tonight: Increasing clouds with a low of 42.

Wednesday: Cloudy with scattered showers. High 50. NE wind of 10-15 MPH.

Wednesday night: Cloudy with rain possible by dawn. Lows in the upper 30's.

Thursday: Rain showers until 5 PM, then rain mixed with wet snow. Temps in the upper 30's in the morning, will fall into the mid 30's by evening. NE wind of 10-20 MPH with gusts to 30 MPH.

Snow Ahead?

A series of storms will effect New England over the next several days. First, a weak front will come thru with a shower or 2 possible. Another front will come in from the west on Wednesday with a couple of showers. Then a more powerful storm will come on Thursday and with cold air in place rain may eventually change to snow-even in Boston. Then a nor'easter is possible this upcoming weekend with more snow possible.

A series of storms will effect the area this week. The first 2 will be weak, with a powerful storm at the end of the week. After an amazing stretch of 31 of the last 32 days above normal, finally below average temps will move in for the middle and the end of the week.

Boston, MA forecast:

Tonight: Clearing and cold. Lows near 44 in Boston, 41 in JP and 34 in the suburbs.

Monday: Partly sunny in the morning, then cloudy in the afternoon. High 62. SW wind of 10-15 MPH.

Monday night: Cloudy until 8 PM, then scattered showers. Lows in the mid 40's.

Tuesday: Partly to mostly sunny with highs in the mid 60's.

Wednesday: Low clouds and fog with scattered showers. Highs in the mid 50's.

Thursday: A powerful nor'easter will likely effect the area with heavy precip and strong winds. Highs in the 40's. Stay tuned!

Friday: Any precip ends early. Cold and windy with highs in the mid 40's.

Tropics: TD 18 has formed in the Caribbean near Honduras with winds of 35 MPH. It is expected to become TS Rina as it hangs around there for the next few days.

Earthquake: A magnitude 7.2 quake hammered east Turkey earlier today. This lead to nearly 50 buildings destroyed and 100's of people dead. Also, many more still buried at this time. We pray for a safe and quick recovery there.

A seasonable and dry weekend is in store for the Head of the Charles race. As, The next front will wait until Monday with a chance of showers. However, overall a quiet pattern will continue for the next several days.

Quiet Weekend

The storm has now moved on to Canada and the wind will slowly diminish over the next few days. Temps on Friday will hold in the 60's and temps during the weekend will be closer to normal as well. Saturday will be partly sunny, while Sunday will feature more sunshine.

Wild Wednesday

A storm will ride up the east coast and hammer the area with an early season nor'easter. The heaviest rain will fall in the afternoon and evening and could lead to street flooding. The wind will be gusty along the coast and some minor coastal flooding is possible. It should dry out for Thursday as temps rise back up again.

Wednesday: Scattered showers in the morning, then heavy rain in the afternoon. Windy with a high of 60. NE wind of 15-25 MPH with gusts to 40 MPH in the afternoon.

600th Post!!!

This is my 600th post since I started my blog a few years ago-thanks so much for reading. I plan to continue this blog thru the upcoming winter and beyond and will write as often as I can from Plymouth, NH. Another nice day is in store for Tuesday as temps climb into the 60s. Then a powerful storm will come up the coast and give us our first nor'easter of the season. Even though it likely won't be tropical, it will still be powerful as it intensifies and combines with another system coming in from the west. There are still some timing issues to work out-but a major rainstorm is probable.

Tonight: Partly cloudy with a low of 48.

Tuesday: A mix of sun and clouds. High 68. SW wind of 10-20 MPH.

Tuesday night: Increasing clouds with lows in the low 50's.

Wednesday: Showers in the morning, then heavy rain in the afternoon. Windy with highs around 60. NE wind of 20-30 MPH with gusts to 40 MPH.

A weak system will come thru the area tonight leading to a shower or 2. Dry air will quickly come in behind it and give us a sunny Monday. Clouds will increase ahead of our next storm on Tuesday. A rainstorm will come up the coast and hit us on Wednesday leading to heavy rain. It should clear out for the end of the week.

Windy Weekend

Showers will exit this evening and the wind will increase behind the storm. The wind this weekend will take down a lot of leaves remaining on the trees-so the color may not be so widespread later. A weak weather system will come thru on Sunday night with a shower possible. A bigger storm is possible at some point next week.

A storm will come up the coast from the south giving us some rain-especially Wed. night into Thurs. Another potent system will come in from the west leading to more rain on Friday. Temps will briefly rise into the 70's on Friday, before falling back for the weekend.

SPECIAL: Columbus Day New England Foliage Weekend

A stellar long weekend is ahead of us as high pressure builds in. Temps will rise into the 80's in the Boston area with full sunshine. It will be a great weekend to travel to see some awesome colorful trees.

Foliage Forecast: New England

The Northern Mts: Many trees in the far north are peaking with great reds and oranges. This is the weekend to travel north to see them! Scroll down for the temp forecast

Central New England: South of the mts. In central NH, ME and VT it is just below peak with many stellar trees. Here in Plymouth, NH many trees are starting to shed their leaves. But, it is not quite at peak yet.

Interior Southern New England: More than 10 miles away from Boston. Foliage seems to be at about 30-50 % with peak a few weeks away.

Boston area: Peak will occur around the end of the month- but some trees are starting to change. A few more cool nights will help out the foliage. Scroll down for the full forecast.

A cool front came thru the area earlier today ushering in the coolest air of the season so far. Frost is likely in the distant NW suburbs tonight and Thursday night, but not in the city. Flooding

Downpours came thru the area early this morning leading to some serious flooding on the North Shore. Streets turned to rivers and many basements flooded as 2 months of rain fell in a few hours time. Now, the storm that took 3 WEEKS to get from Chicago to Boston will finally move out to sea. Cooler, but drier air will come in for the next few days before a warming trend comes in for the holiday weekend.

Rainy Weekend

It now appears that a storm will form off the mid-Atlantic coast tonight and ride up the coast and give us a chilly rain this weekend. Winds may gust to 30 MPH along the coast the next few days adding to the chill. Most of the rain should fall on Saturday morning, with lighter shower after that.

Thunderstorms came thru the area this evening with downpours, lightning and gusty winds. Behind the front dry air will come in and temps will once again rise to near 80 on Friday. However, another storm system will come into the area on Saturday leading to more rain. The low pressure system should be far enough away for a dry on Sunday.

Wet Forecast

It now appears that the storm that has been stalled in the midwest will slowly move towards the area. Thursday showers are likely in the morning-along with a late t-storm. Friday temps will once again warm to near 80 before a cool front arrives. On Saturday low pressure will form on the stalled front leading to more showers.

Boston, MA forecast:

Tonight: Increasing clouds with scattered showers by dawn. Low 60.

Thursday: Showers in the morning, then scattered showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon. High 73. SW wind of 10-20 MPH.

Thursday night: Scattered showers and thunderstorms in the evening, then mostly cloudy. Lows in the mid 60's.

Friday: Mostly cloudy until 4 PM, then scattered thunderstorms. Muggy with highs around 80.

Saturday: Mostly cloudy in the morning, then showers in the afternoon. Highs in the mid 60's.

Sunday: Mostly cloudy with highs around 60.

Tropics: TS Ophelia has regenerated near the Leeward islands with winds of 50 MPH. It is expected to pass close to Bermuda this weekend.

Like Summer

After another summer type day Today, Tuesday will be a bit cooler and cloudier. Wednesday we will have a chance of a shower or 2, but most of the rain should hold off until Thursday. Friday will be one last warm day before a cool front comes thru.

Tropics: Philippe is no threat to land as it spins in the central Atlantic. Also watching the remains of Ophelia near the leeward islands.

Humid Week

High pressure offshore will continue to pump warmth and humidity into the area. Later, a storm will come in from the west on Wednesday leading to showers and storms for a few days. A sharp cool front will come in for the end of the week leading to cooler weather.

Monday: A mix of sun and clouds and humid. Areas of fog in the morning with a high of 76 in Boston and 83 inland. SE wind of 10 MPH.

Better Weekend

The heaviest rain will fall overnight tonight, leading to a mainly dry weekend. Sunday will be the better day as temps rise close to 80. It will remain muggy into early next week along with more showers possible.

Happy Fall!

Fall begins at 505 AM on Friday! Fall will start out wet as a storm stalled to our west will bring periods of rain over the next few days. The heaviest rain will be late Friday into Saturday, I'm hopeful that it will dry out some by Sunday.

Alert: A Flood Watch is in effect for the Boston area until 8 PM Saturday.

Wave after Wave

A storm will stall to our west and waves of rain will come up the eastern seaboard leading to days of rain. While it won't be raining every minute, a shower or downpour is possible at any point. This pattern may stick around thru early next week.

A front will come into the area on Tuesday leading to some showers for the afternoon hours. Slow clearing will occur on Wednesday before another front will come in to the area. However, this front will stall leading to days of dark and dreary days.

Thursday: Showers with downpours likely. Highs around 70.

Friday: First day of fall with more showers likely. Highs in the low 70's.

Tropics: Watching a cluster of storms out in the Central Atlantic that may become our next storm.

The Week Ahead

High pressure will continue to brings fall like weather with cool nights and crisp afternoons early this week. However, by Wednesday warmer air will come back into the area behind a warm front. The front will stall allowing low pressure to ride along it and give us rain late in the week.
