A storm will come in along a stalled front Tomorrow, giving us a day of light and fluffy snow. Then, a much more powerful storm will come in right behind it giving us a walloping of snow. The second storm is warmer, and the trick is determining the mix line. At this point, it seems it will make it to the Boston area briefly, cutting back a tad on snow amounts. However, a degree or 2 could make a difference between sleet and ending up with 20 inches of snow. I will have better confidence tomorrow.

Back to College
I arrived up here at PSU in Plymouth, NH this afternoon, as classes start tomorrow. They have less snow than back in JP, and we are both about to add to our snow pack. First a storm will slide south of New England on Tuesday, giving the Boston area a general 3-6 inches of snow. Then, on Wednesday another powerful coastal storm will hit the area with more snow. At this point, models seem to be trending colder-leading to an all snow solution in Boston. However, just a slight shift would bring sleet and freezing rain into the city-leading to a major ice storm. Where it does stay all snow another FOOT+ is likely. It will be interesting to see what BPS does during another stormy period.
Boston, MA forecast:
Tonight: Clear and frigid. Lows near 14 in Boston, 12 in JP and near 0 in the coldest areas.
Monday: Sunny and cold. High 22. NW wind of 10-20 MPH.
Monday night: Increasing clouds with lows in the teens.
Tuesday: Cloudy until 10 AM, then snow. Highs in the mid 20's. 3-6 inches of snow expected.
Wednesday: Heavy snow-possibly mixing with sleet south of Boston. Highs around 30. Another FOOT+ of snow is possible at this early stage. Stay tuned as this could easily change.

400th Post!!!
This is my 400th post since I have started my blog. Thanks for checking out my blog during this busy winter. The snow today dried up as it entered the area, so most did not not get more than a few flurries. Tomorrow I am headed back to PSU for spring classes, including Climatology. I will continue to blog about the Boston weather while I am there, just like I did during the Fall semester. This week we will have a weak snow event on Tuesday giving us a few inches, then a bigger, but a messy storm on Wednesday.
Boston, MA forecast:
Tonight: Partial clearing with lows near 24 in Boston, 22 in JP and 15 in the suburbs.
Sunday: I head back to college. A mix of sun and clouds with a high of 32. West wind of 10-20 MPH.
Sunday night: Clear with lows around 10 in Boston and single digits in the suburbs.
Monday: Sunny and cold with highs in the low 20's.
Tuesday: Snow arriving in the mid morning and lasting thru the rest of the day. Highs in the mid 20's. At this point a few inches are likely. Stay tuned.
Wednesday: A powerful storm will effect the area with heavy precip and strong winds. Highs around freezing. Stay tuned for updates from Plymouth, NH!
Tropics: Tropical Storm Bianca will effect Perth, Australia with heavy rain and gusty winds over the next day or so. Of course, it is now summer in the southern Hemisphere. The North coast of Australia gets Tropical Cyclones often, however, the West coast where Perth is it is not as common.

Snow Totals
Well, the storm intensified last night dropping thunder snow in the area. That caused snow rates of 2-4 inches per hour, and most areas picked up more than a Foot of snow. Another weak weather system will bring flurries to the area tomorrow, and then light snow on Saturday as another clipper comes thru. On Sunday, I will be heading back to PSU for the spring semester and taking Climatology.

Tough Call
Well, this is the toughest forecast for a winter storm I have made since I started this blog. The American model I trust, takes nearly the entire storm out to sea-giving us less than 5 inches or so. However, most of the international guidance gives us an all out Blizzard with up to 20 inches. I will be taking a conservative middle road in the Boston area, and this is supported by another global model. Keep in mind it will probably change and I will blog again before the storm starts.
Alerts:
A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for the Boston area from 5 PM Wednesday until 10 AM Thursday.
Boston, MA forecast:
Tonight: Clear this evening, then increasing clouds after midnight. Lows near 14.
Wednesday morning: Mostly cloudy with temps rising into the mid 20's.
Storm Timeline: Also tough to pinpoint
6 PM: Snow arrives in Boston
10 PM-6AM: Heavy snow, snow rates of 1-2 inches per hour. Temps in the mid 20's.
9 AM: Snow ends in Boston.
Amounts: Probably will change. A little less now than I was thinking earlier tonight.
7-10: The Boston metro area. Around 9 inches in JP.
4-7: North and west of 128.
Winds:
60 MPH: Nantucket
50: The Cape and vineyard
40: The Boston area.
Stay tuned for an update during the day on Wednesday.

Another Blizzard Possible
After the arctic air from today, a warm front will come thru tomorrow providing us with a little light snow in the morning. An inch or 2 is possible. The bigger storm arrives late Wednesday and into Thursday with the potential for another FOOT of snow. The exact track is not set in stone, and just a slight shift closer the coast would "milder" air in off the water, allowing sleet and rain to mix in and cutting back on snow totals. At this time, I expect all snow in Boston and points NW and SW. SE of the Boston area less snow will be found because it will start as rain.
Lows this Morning:
Keene, NH: -25
Worcester, MA:-9
Lawrence: -9
Norwood: -6
Natick: -5
JP: -3
Logan: -2 (First temp below 0 since 2005)
Boston, MA forecast:
Tonight: Clear this evening, then cloudy late. Temps near 6 this evening, but rising to 17 by dawn.
Tuesday: Snow in the morning, then some peaks of sun are possible in the afternoon. High 34.
SW wind of 10-20 MPH. 1-2 inches of snow expected.
Tuesday night: Cloudy with lows in the mid 20's.
Wednesday: Cloudy until 3 PM, then snow becoming heavy by nightfall. Highs around freezing.
Wednesday night thru Thursday: Heavy snow and strong winds likely. Temps in the upper 20's. A FOOT or more of snow is possible. I will issue amounts tomorrow. Stay tuned!

The track has shifted further NW, putting the greatest totals in the Boston area. The snow will come down quickly all morning, but will abruptly end early in the afternoon. Grazed
The rain slowly changed to snow this evening, and will last until 11 PM or so. A coating on some cars are possible. Any slush or puddles left will freeze as temps will fall into the 20's by morning. The next storm up is Friday and this point it seems like a grazing. The storm will explode to far out to sea to give us a lot of snow, with the most snow falling in SE MA. Of course, a shift further NW would bring the heaviest totals to the Boston area, and that is still possible.
Boston, MA forecast:
Tonight: Snow showers this evening, then partial clearing. Low 22. Snow may coat the ground in some areas.

Snow continued to midday in Boston and amounted to a few inches until it turned to rain. However, NW of 128 5-8 inches of snow fell before the changeover. One more band of snow will come thru Wednesday afternoon, although it may start as rain. Temps will cool thru the day, and the snow may amount to a coating to as much as an inch. US weather: Every state except for Florida has at least a trace of snow on the ground. Even Hawaii has a few inches on top of their highest mountain.

Blizzard Warning!
A Blizzard Warning has been issued for the MA coastline, including Boston. This warning was issued because the strongest winds will be along the coast, creating blizzard conditions. Snow will begin after midnight, and blinding snow will continue thru the morning. Stay off the roads unless you have to go out. Also, I will watch the mix line closely, because it could come close to the city for a brief time- which may cut down amounts slightly. However, at this time I am still predicting all snow, and a lot of it. I think the mix will be confined to the south shore and Cape.
Alerts:
A Blizzard Warning is in effect for the coast of MA, including the city of Boston. The warning expires at 8 PM Wednesday.
A Winter Storm Warning is in effect elsewhere.
A High Wind Warning is in effect for Nantucket. Gusts may approach Hurricane Force!
Storm Timeline: Wednesday
2 AM: Snow arrives in Boston. Some ocean effect snow showers are possible before that.
5 AM-1 PM: Blizzard conditions. Snow rates of 2-3 inches per hour. Stay off the roads if you can.

7 PM: Snow tapers to flurries
Amounts: Inches
12-16+: The entire Boston area all the way to Worcester. About 14 inches in JP! Some towns may approach 20 inches! A heavy, wet snow inside 128 will stick to power lines and trees causing some power outages.
8-12: The immediate south shore south of Marshfield.
4-8: The Cape and islands-although not much on the outer cape and Nantucket.
Winds: MPH
70+: Nantucket as the storm passes over, or just to the west of Nantucket.
50 MPH+: The rest of the cape and the Vineyard.

Blizzard Wednesday!
A powerful ocean storm will slam the Boston area on Wednesday with heavy snow and wind. The heaviest snow will fall during the morning commute, along with blowing and drifting as the wind gusts over 4o MPH. The snow will last thru most of the day, really piling up-especially away from the coast. Although amounts in Boston and near the coast won't be too bad either, except on the Cape and islands.
Alerts:
A Winter Storm Watch is in effect for all of the area. It will be upgraded to a warning Tuesday.
Boston, MA forecast:
Tonight: Clear with lows in the teens.
Tuesday: Sunny in the morning, then increasing clouds in the afternoon. High 29. NE wind of 10-15 MPH.

Not much
The main band of snow has developed in the Worcester to Providence corridor, and that is where most of the snow will fall. A final band will come down from Maine late tonight, and it may add a coating or so. This is a bit disappointing, as we miss out on another chance for significant snowfall. A powerful nor'easter is probable Tuesday night into Wednesday, more details on that in the next few days.
Boston, MA forecast:
Tonight: Cloudy with scattered snow showers. Low 28. NE wind of 10-20 MPH. Total snow amounts up to 1 inch.
Sunday: Cloudy until 9 AM, then clearing. Windy with a high of 34. NW wind of 20-30 MPH.
Sunday night: Clear with lows in the teens.
Monday: Mainly sunny with highs in the low 30's.
Tuesday: Increasing clouds with highs around 30. Snow possible at night.
Wednesday: A powerful winter nor'easter may hit the area Tuesday night into Wednesday. Highs around freezing. Stay tuned as we get closer!

2 Parts
As expected, the trough set up over SW CT- where over a foot of snow fell this afternoon. Here in Boston, we have had some ocean effect snows, but it hasn't amounted to much. The band from CT will come through late tonight, in a weakened form. It will put down a an inch or 2 into Saturday morning. Then, another storm on its heels will pass close to the area Saturday night, providing the area with more snow. The exact track is still in question, but it seems the heaviest snow will be south of the city.
Boston, MA forecast:
Tonight: Snow showers early, then periods of snow before dawn. Low 27. NE wind of 10-20 MPH. Snow amounts of 1-2 inches expected.
Saturday: Light snow until 9 AM, then scattered flurries and snow showers. High 35. NE wind of 15-25 MPH. An additional inch is possible-at most.
Saturday night: Snow picks up in intensity again, with the heaviest over SE MA. Lows in the mid 20's. NE wind of 15-20 MPH. 1-3 inches of additional snow expected-this could easily change so stay tuned for more updates.
Sunday: Clearing and windy with highs in the mid 30's.

Slow Snow
The stronger storm will head out to sea, while a weaker storm will travel to our west. A trough will run in between the storms, and that will cause banding of the snow. Where this sets up in New England will determine how much snow we get. At this point, it seems to set up over SW CT, giving them 6+ inches of snow, and us 3-5 inches over a 24 hour period. However, it could shift NE, dropping several inches of snow in the Boston area, although it seems unlikely. The amount will be determined by tomorrow.

Tonight: Clear with lows near 22 in Boston, 19 in JP and 15 in the suburbs.

Then a powerful ocean storm will make a close pass to the area late Friday and lasting into the weekend.
