Update
It now appears that the storm is making a quicker arrival. So, the snow will start in Boston by 9 PM, and little earlier on the north shore. It will snow most of the night, but warmer will come in by 9 AM monday morning, changing the snow to rain. The steady rain will be over by 1 PM. I now expect 2-4 inches of snow on Cape Ann and 1-3 inches in Boston. Scroll down for more details on the week's forecast.
Snow to start March
The storm that hammered the region on Thursday with strong winds and heavy rain is still stalled to our west. Tonight, it will move offshore and merge with another storm coming up the coast. However, it will be slightly too far east to give us a big event. Then, all eyes will turn to another powerful storm coming up the coast for Wednesday. It is still to early to tell how close it will come. The current track would give us a grazing with a few inches of snow, but if it comes closer to the coast we could have good size snowstorm.

Hurricane force winds!
Major wind gusts over Hurricane force hit Mass and NH last night, along with 2-4 inches of rain. It caused a lot of power outages ages and some roofs were ripped off houses. Many trees were toppled, especially on the north shore. The storm was as strong as a category 2 Hurricane for a time last night! The storm is still stalled to our south, and throwing scattered snow and rain showers our way. Any rain in Boston will change to snow showers, and we may pick up an inch my mid-morning Saturday. Then, another powerful storm will come up the coast and may graze the region with a few inches of snow on Sunday night. A bigger storm is possible around Wednesday.

Flood Warning!
The height of the storm will be between 8-11 PM tonight with heavy rain and strong winds. Wind gusts may approach 60 MPH along the coast. The heavy rain will be over by midnight, then showers continuing afterwards as the wind diminishes. Cold air will come in behind the system, but it will be too late. In fact, I still expect mainly rain showers during the day on Friday. Then, the storm will stall on top of us as it weakens. That means snow showers Saturday and Sunday, and a minor accumulation is possible. Then, another major coastal storm will come up the coast and make a close pass to New England on Sunday night This time, cold air will be in place, and so if it hits it would be a mainly snow event.
Alerts:
Flood Warning in effect for Boston to Providence points north and west. Street flooding is likely as well as flooded basements.
A Coastal Flood Warning is in effect for the entire coastline for tonight and Friday. 15-20 Ft waves will crash ashore, and cause beach erosion and splashover.
A High Wind Warning is in effect for the Coast. Gusts over 60 MPH are likely in the next few hours.
Boston, MA forecast:
Tonight: Heavy rain this evening, then showers after midnight. Very windy with lows in the mid to upper 30's. NE wind of 30-40 with gusts to 60 MPH this evening, decreasing to 45 MPH after midnight.
Friday: Rain showers in Boston and snow showers NW of 495. 2-4 inches are possible NW of 495. Near steady temp around 37. NE wind of 10-15 MPH with gusts to 30 MPH.
Friday night: Rain changing to snow showers. Lows around 30. Snow accumulation up to 1 inch.
Saturday: Snow showers until 10 AM, then rain mixing with snow showers. Some accumulation is possible north and west of 128. Some peaks of sun are possible. Highs in the mid 30's.
Saturday night: Any rain changing to snow, accumulating 1-3 inches.
Sunday thru Monday: Snow showers likely Sunday morning, then another powerful nor'easter may effect the region in the afternoon. Temps in the low 30's. Stay tuned for details.

Wintercane!
A intense storm as strong as a Category 1 Hurricane will come up the coast and hammer New England with heavy rain, snow and storm force winds. However, it will be a mainly rain event in the Boston area. But, northern and Western New England will get hit with 1-2 feet of snow and strong winds. However, some rain may reach as far north as northern NH. Even Philly and NYC will pick up 12-18 inches of snow along with blizzard conditions. Drifts over 4 feet will be possible on Saturday. I suggest not making the trip to northern NH or VT this weekend, as many roads will be impassible. On Friday cold air will come in behind the system and change it to snow in Boston, but by then the bulk of the storm will be over. Snow showers may continue through Sunday, then yet another storm may come up the coast early next week.
Snow Totals: Major snow amounts from last night and today
Rowe, MA: 26 inches! (East Slopes of Berkshires.)

A Coastal Flood advisory is in effect for the north shore. Major coastal flooding may occur on Thursday night because of a very strong east wind along the entire coast, including Boston.
Timeline:
Tonight: Light rain and drizzle as the wind slowly diminishes. Temps holding in the upper 30's to near 40.
7 AM-Noon Thursday: Still light rain, as the wind starts to pick up.
1 PM: Steady rain arrives, wind gusts to 40 MPH.
4 PM- 10 PM: Downpours and storm force winds. Winds gusting out of the east to 75 MPH (Hurricane force!) on the Cape, 65 MPH in Boston and the north shore. 50 MPH further inland. Urban and poor drainage flooding is likely. Temps in the upper 30's.
Rest of Thursday night: Rain changes to snow from west to east. Winds gusting over 50 MPH from the North.
Friday: Mainly snow north and west of Boston, and rain changing to snow in Boston. Still rain to the south.
Friday night: Snow showers continue. Temps drop to near freezing, so watch out for a flash freeze.

Biggest nor'easter on the way
Storm #1 has been slow coming in, as it has just been cloudy all day. However, it is now snowing in Worcester as of 530PM, and rain has arrived in Providence. The precip will first lift north, and then east arriving in Boston after 9 PM. It will probably arrive as rain in Boston, but then change to snow after midnight. It will be wet snow until 9 AM, before changing to rain in Boston. Then, rain will continue for the rest of the day. However, north and west of Worcester it will stay mainly snow until afternoon. They could pick up 2 feet of snow in the Berkshires and southern VT. Then, a much more powerful storm will come up the coast on Thursday. The latest model runs suggest it will pass right over us, providing us with a wind-driven rain storm during the day on Thursday. Hurricane force wind gusts will be possible along the coast, including the Boston area. Then, as colder air comes in on Friday it will change it to snow and few inches will be possible. However, an additional 2-3 FEET of snow may fall in upstate NY, VT and central and northern NH. Even NYC will pick up a good amount of snow. I suggest not making any trip to northern New England this weekend, as blizzard conditions may last through Sunday. Also, drifts over 4 feet are possible and power outages are likely.
Timeline for storm 1:
9 PM: Rain or wet snow arrives in Boston.
Midnight Wednesday: Any rain changes to all snow in Boston.
6 AM: Begins to mix with rain in Boston, with snow to the NW.
9 AM: Rain in Boston, snow still NW of 495.
10 AM-5 PM: Rain, with NE winds gusting to 30 MPH.
Amounts:
6-12+: Northern Worcester county and SW NH.

2-4: North and west of 128. Including: Concord, Natick, Topsfield, Reading, Lincoln.
Coating-2: The immediate Boston area to Providence. Including Medford, Dedham, Norwood, Franklin. Maybe just a coating at Logan, but an inch of slush is possible in JP.
Storm #2 details: Revisions likely.
Wednesday night: Rain and snow showers as we break between systems.
Thursday: Rain, heavy at times along with an increasing NE wind. NE wind gusts to 70 MPH are possible along the coast in the afternoon.
Thursday night: Rain changes to snow from west to east. The rain/snow line doesn't make it to Boston before dawn. NE wind shifting to NW with gusts over 50 MPH likely.
Friday: Rain finally changes to Snow in Boston amounting to a few inches, but more NW of 128.
Weekend: Blizzard rages in Northern New England as storm stalls, but just rain and snow showers in the Boston area/

Back to back storms
The first storm will come in Tuesday afternoon and will start as snow from Boston points north and west, and will become steady by around 6 PM. Gradually, the snow will change to rain from SE to NW, changing to rain my midnight in Boston. However, NW of 128 will have a longer period of snow, so more snow accumulation expected there. Wednesday will bring a cold and soaking rain most of the day, as warm air comes in off the ocean. Then, we will have break before a more powerful storm comes up the coast for Thursday night through Saturday. As always, the track is key. If it tracks south of Nantucket, then we could have a blockbuster snowstorm. However, a track right over us or to the west would give us mainly rain.
Storm #1 timeline: Precip will be delayed compared with my forecast yesterday
Tues 7 AM: light snow possible, except light rain south of the city.
3 PM: Light snow becomes more widespread
6 PM: steady snow arrives in Boston, with rain south of the city.
9 PM: begins to mix with rain in Boston, still snow to the NW.
Midnight: changes to rain in Boston, still snow NW of 128.
By dawn: Rain everywhere east of Worcester, as temps reach the upper 30's.
8 AM- 4PM WED: Rain, heavy at times, although some sleet may mix in. Rain/Snow line moves into western Mass!

3-6: North and west of 128. Including areas like Concord, Sudbury, Topsfield, Natick, Reading.
1-3: A line from the immidate Boston area to Providence. Including Medford, Dedham, Westwood, Walpole. About 2 inches in JP.

A tricky storm Tuesday
The first in a line of storms will come up the coast, and the first is a hit in Southern New England. Precip will start Tuesday midday and continue through Wednesday morning. I am leaning towards a slushy inch or two of snow in the Boston to Providence corridor before the changeover, but more accumulation to the west. Then, it may flip back and forth between rain, sleet and snow Tuesday night and Wednesday morning in Boston, while it stays mainly snow NW of rte. 495. Then, we will have a break Wednesday afternoon through Thursday before we watch the next storm coming up the coast.
Boston, MA forecast:
Tonight: Clear, lows in the 20's.
Monday: Sunny with sea breeze. Highs near 40 at logan 43 in JP, and 48 west of 128.
Monday night: Turning cloudy with lows in the mid to upper 20's.
Tuesday Storm Timeline (some revisions likely):
11 AM: Snow arrives in Boston
2 PM: Snow changes to rain in Boston, while it stays snow NW of 128.
6 PM: Changes to rain briefly NW of 128, still snow NW of 495.
8 PM: Rain/Snow line comes back to the coast. Not a full change back to snow in Boston.
9 PM-10AM Wednesday: Rain mixing with snow in Boston, and Snow to the NW and rain to the south.
Noon and beyond: Lingering light and snow and rain showers.
Amounts (revisions are likely also):
6-8+: North and west of 495. A foot or more is possible around Keene, NH.
3-6: North and west of route 128. Including areas like Lincoln, Natick, Topsfield, Reading and Wellslely.

South of 95: Mainly rain.

Storms ahead
We just got back from Stowe, VT this evening where they have a few inches of snow. Except for my mom's injured ankle, we had a great time cross country skiing, swimming, and relaxing. However, much of NH and VT have no snow at all. That is going to change over the next week. A series of storms will come up the coast and each will bring snow, rain and wind. The first one will approach the area on Tuesday bringing rain and snow late Tuesday into Wednesday. It is still uncertain on the precip type, and if the heaviest snow will make it into New England. Then, the storm will stall and wait for a more powerful storm to kick it out on Thursday. The second storm may be when we pick up our accumulating snow, but the track is still very unclear. There may be yet another storm next weekend.
Boston, MA forecast:
Tonight: Clear, lows near 32 downtown, 29 in JP and the mid 20's in outside of 128.
Sunday: Mostly sunny, but not as warm as Saturday. High 43. NW wind of 10-20 MPH.
Sunday night: Clear, lows in the mid to upper 20's.
Monday: Partly cloudy, highs near 40.
Tuesday afternoon thru Friday: A series of storms will likely affect the region with rain, snow and wind. Temps near freezing during entire period. Major snow accumulation possible over parts of New England. Stay tuned for details.

Snow Tuesday
It will be chilly the next 2 days with cloudy skies tomorrow, and more sun on Monday. Then a clipper system will move in from the west and dump more snow on the mid-Atlantic and the northeast. This won't be a blockbuster snowstorm, but a moderate amount is likely. Otherwise, vacation week will be quiet. I am headed to Stowe, VT with my family for the week and this will be my last blog until next weekend.
Boston, MA vacation week forecast:

Snow Bust
Temps were too warm for snow during the day, and we lost that accumulation. Temps are still around freezing here in Boston, and the heaviest snow is just coming to an end. We may pick up about 3 inches in JP by midnight with 4-8 on the south shore. I am sorry for all those who left work early or changed their plans because of the storm. I am very disappointed, as now we will once again be dry and cold for a while before we head to Stowe, Vt for vacation. I am sorry that there won't be a lot of snow for the Snow Festival at Franklin Park on Saturday.

Where's the snow?
At 230 PM temps are around 35 in JP an and we have even seen a little light rain over the last half hour or so. However, I expect the temp to drop by 4 PM, then the heavy snow will arrive. I am still expecting 6-8 inches here in JP and more to the south by the time it winds down at around midnight. The wind will also increase throughout the afternoon, and that will create whiteout conditions. I suggest staying off the roads between 4 and 8 PM tonight if you don't have to go out.

Morning Update- Slight shift
It now appears that the heaviest snow will be from Boston and points south, as the storm has shifted south slightly. To the north of Boston amounts will drop off dramatically. However, the city streets may just be wet for a time.

It now appears that the storm will track close enough to the area to provide most of the area with a good amount of snow on Wednesday afternoon and evening. The nor'easter will also bring wind gusts over 50 MPH at the coast, and coastal flooding. The week ahead
Monday and Tuesday will be quiet with temps reaching the low to mid 30's each day. Then, all eyes turn to a storm gathering to the south. It will once again come up the coast, but a bit further north than last time. However, it is still uncertain how close it will come. One trustworthy model has a blizzard for Southern New England on Wednesday and other models just has a grazing, with with the Cape getting most of the accumulation. NYC is expected to get a good amount of snow out of this storm, and Philly will be hit again.

Are we next?
The blizzard that missed us is causing massive travel delays in the mid-Atlantic with over 2 feet of snow in most areas! We may be next in line for a major snowstorm, as a powerful storm comes up the coast on Wednesday. This one looks to track closer than the last one, but it is still uncertain how close it will come. If it tracks perfectly we could get a lot of snow, but if it comes too close then we may have some mixing with rain. However, I don't expect 2-3 feet like the mid-Atlantic got over the last couple days. It will be cold and dry until then.
Snow totals: As of 4 PM:
Frostburg, MD: 36 inches! (near West Virginia border)
BWI airport: 26.8
Philly: 26.7
Dulles airport: 20

Morning Update -Just south
The snow has a sharp cutoff just south of the Cape and Islands right now, and I don't expect much more movement north. Here in Boston we have had some ocean effect flurries, and that will continue for most of the day here and along the south shore. The snow may coat the ground in some spots, but no more than that. However, the mid-Atlantic has already picked up a lot of snow as of 9 this morning. It is expected to snow heavily through tonight.
Storm totals: As of 9 AM this morning.
Baltimore, MD: 20 inches
DC: 15
Philly, PA: 10

Close Call
I am not 100% convinced that all of the storm will pass to our south, as of 9 PM the snow had entered NYC. It will be interesting to see how far north the snow makes it before heading straight east. I think some of the snow bands may clip the Cape and Islands as it heads out to sea. That may amount to 1-3 inches, especially on Nantucket. Snow showers are possible along the coast, including Boston which may amount to a coating or so. Keep on eye on the radar, especially Saturday morning.
Boston, MA forecast:
Tonight: Cloudy with lows near 24 in Boston, 22 in JP and in the teens in the suburbs.
Saturday: A close call as the storm heads mainly out to sea. Light snow is possible on the Cape and Islands, and a chance of snow shower in Boston and along the coast. Windy with highs in the mid 20's. NE winds of 15-25 MPH with gusts to 40 MPH on the Cape.
Saturday night: Cloudy early, then becoming partly cloudy. Lows in the low to mid teens.
Sunday: Sunny and windy. High 28. NW wind of 15-25 MPH.
Monday: Sunny, highs near 30.
Extended: Another nor'easter will threaten New England on Wednesday, as temps stay around 30. Stay tuned for details.

Near Miss
The latest guidance suggests that the storm will hammer the Mid-Atlantic, but not make it to Southern New England before heading out to sea. Parts of New Jersey and the whole state of Delaware are under Blizzard Warnings for 18-24 inches of snow through Saturday evening. They are also expecting 18-24 inches at our relatives' house in Chevy Chase, MD- just outside of DC. Winter storm watches have been expanded to NYC where 5-9 inches are expected. But the steady snow will never make it to Boston, as it now appears just flurries or a snow shower is expected. However, on the Cape and Islands they may have some light snow amounting to an inch. Also, if the storm tracks 50-100 miles further north than expected now, then we will have some snow in Boston.
Boston, MA Weekend Forecast:
Tonight: Clear and cold. Lows near 19 in Boston, 17 in JP and 12 in the suburbs.
Friday: Sunny for most of the day, then some clouds late. High 32. NW wind of 10-15 MPH.
Friday night: Clouds thickening, lows near 20.
Saturday: Mostly cloudy with some flurries in Boston, and light snow possible on the Cape. Highs in the mid 20's. Gusty winds on the cape.
Sunday: Sunny and cold. Highs in the mid 20's.
Extended: Our next chance at snow will be Wednesday into Thursday, as another coastal storm makes a close pass to New England.

Slight Shift
The latest model runs suggest a grazing of the major ocean storm on Saturday. At this point the heavy snow will remain just to our south, especially in the mid-Atlantic. Up to 2 feet are expected there, and that includes the cities of DC, Baltimore and Philly. Even NYC will pickup a foot or more of snow. If the storm tracks further north we may get a sizable snowstorm, but I don't expect 2 feet in Southern New England. At this point I expect 2-4 inches for Boston points west along the Pike, and 4-8 south of a line from Providence to Plymouth.
Boston, MA forecast:
Tonight: Cloudy early, then clearing. Lows near 24 Downtown, 21 in JP and teens in the Suburbs.
Thursday: Bright and sunny, but breezy. High 29. NW wind of 10-20 MPH with gusts to 30 MPH.
Thursday night: Clear, lows in the teens.
Friday: Sunny in the morning, then increasing clouds in the afternoon. Highs around 30.
Saturday: Some snow does seem likely throughout the day in Boston and points south. Highs around 30. Stay tuned on this one.
Sunday: Clearing and breezy. Highs in the mid 20's.
Extended: Another nor'easter will threaten the area on Tuesday, at this point it is another close call.

Blizzard Saturday?
The light snow tonight won't be as widespread as I thought yesterday. Scattered snow showers after midnight tonight and early Wednesday. It may leave a coating in some areas. However, some locations may have just flurries. Then, cold and dry air will come in for Thursday and Friday. Then, another in a line of storms will come up the east coast. It will intensify as it comes up the coast. Once again, the track is key. Right now, it appears we will be right on the edge of the heavy snow. So a plowable (6+) snow is likely on Saturday afternoon and evening, especially in Boston and points south. If the storm comes a little closer, we will get more.
Boston, MA forecast:
Tonight: Cloudy with scattered snow showers after midnight. Lows in the low to mid 20's.
Wednesday: Cloudy with scattered snow showers in the morning, then faint sun in the afternoon. High 35. Some locations may have a coating of snow by noon. A light north wind.
Wednesday night: Clearing, lows near 20.
Thursday: Sunny, but breezy. High 30.
Friday: Sunny with increasing clouds late. Highs in the upper 20's.
Saturday: Cloudy in the morning, then snow in the afternoon. 6+ inches are likely by Sunday morning. Highs in the upper 20's. Windy along the coast.
Sunday: Clearing and windy, highs in the mid 20's.
Groundhog day: Phil did see his shadow, despite the cloudy conditions. That means 6 more weeks of winter.

Light snow Wednesday
Tuesday will be another dry day, but with more clouds in the afternoon. It is also Groundhog day, and I expect Phil not to see his shadow in PA, which means spring is right around the corner! Not really of course, but spring will be here eventually. Then, a big storm will form offshore and we will only get grazed by it. Expect periods of light snow Wednesday morning. It may amount to an inch, which may make some side streets slippery.
Boston, MA forecast:
Tonight: Clear, with lows near 20 in Boston, 18 in JP and 13 in the suburbs.
Groundhog day: Sunny in the morning, then cloudy in the afternoon. High 30. NW wind of 10-15 MPH.
Tuesday night: Cloudy until 1 AM, then light snow. Lows near 20.
Wednesday: Light snow in the morning, then remaining cloudy. Highs in the low 30's. Total accumulation around an inch.
Thursday: Sunny and colder, highs in the mid 20's.
Friday: Sunny, highs in the upper 20's.
Saturday: A mix of sun and clouds. Highs near 30.
