Snow!

This nor'easter has brought heavy snow to most of the region. As we were driving back to JP from Medford, there was snow on the grass, cars, and even some sidewalks. Snow is expected to accumulate a bit more into the night, with some areas picking up around an inch on grassy surfaces. Worcester county may pick up around 4-5 inches as it is a bit colder there. The heavy precipitation is expected to wind down around midnight. Still, there may be some left over flurries or drizzle in the morning. It started to snow because as the wind shifted to the north temps dropped quickly, and heavy rain turned to heavy snow. The winds have been quite gusty out of the NE/north with gusts up to around 35 MPH here in JP, but up to 54 MPH on Nantucket.

Forecast:

Tonight: Snow from Boston points north and west, and rain south ending by 1 am. Then snow or rain showers continuing. Snow accumulation up to an inch close to the city, but up to 5 inches near Worcester. Lows in the 30's. except 40's on the cape. Windy. NW wind at 15-20 MPH with gusts to 40 MPH along the coast. One down, one to go

A second nor'easter is bearing down on the region. This storm is expected to come closer than the last storm, as more heavy rain and stronger winds are expected to overtake the region. The storm is a little slower in gathering than initially thought, so the rain will come in around dawn tomorrow. Sunday will be a washout, with over an inch of rain possible especially SE of Boston. If the precip comes in fast enough, with cold air in place some wet snow may mix in west of 128. A slushy coating is possible in the Worcester Hills, and 2-4 inches of snow may fall in the Berkshires. The wind will be stronger than the last storm, with gusts to 60 MPH on the outer cape on Nantucket. Gusts to 45 MPH likely in Boston and the north shore. It will begin to wind down by evening, as the storm pulls away.

Local alerts: High Wind Watch for the Cape and islands, likely to be upgraded to a warning soon. A Wind Advisory in effect for Boston and the southern suburbs, including areas like Brockton and Weymouth. Coastal flood warning for entire mass. coast.

Boston forecast:

First flakes!

The first flakes of the season were sighted over most of central and parts of eastern mass last night and early this morning. A snow shower even came through Government center at 10 this morning. After we dropped off my brother at Beaver Country Day in Chestnut Hill at 730 this morning, wet snowflakes were coming down. We even sighted snowflakes in Brighton on Comm. Ave. Some near western suburbs like Waltham reported coatings of snow. Worcester picked up 1.4 inches of snow, and some hills around the city picked up more than that. Also, some places in PA and SW New York picked up over 7 inches of the white stuff, causing major tree damage.

There is another nor'easter on tap for Saturday night and Sunday, as another low pressure center comes up the coast. Saturday will be mainly dry and chilly, but the rain will begin to move in around 5 pm. The rain will last all day Sunday, and showers will continue on Monday. This storm will come much closer, so snow may fly in northern New England and the Berkshires, but not in eastern mass. The wind won't be as strong with this storm, with gusts to around 40 MPH on the Cape.

No record: Not earliest snow in Boston, the earliest snow ever is October 10th.

Sunday night: Rain continuing, low 40. Wind diminishing to North at 10-20 MPH.

Extended: Great weather is expected to return on Tuesday and beyond with sunny skies and temps in the 60's!

Wet Snowflakes!

The latest track bring the strong storm just south of what the models were indicating yesterday. The heaviest rain and strongest winds will be confined to the south shore and the cape. Today was a very cold day, with highs only reaching 43 in Boston. As the precip starts falling, the temp will drop and that will allow for some wet snowflakes to fall in some spots. A slushy coating is possible west of 495, as the temps there will be the coldest. The strongest winds from this nor'easter will be on the islands, where gusts to 55 MPH possible. Here in Boston and on the north shore gusts to 35 MPH are possible. The wind will make it feel like it is in the MID 20'S most of the day, as the air temp will barely make it to 40. The rain will begin to leave Boston at around 10 AM, and around noon northeast of the city. The wind will remain gusty throughout the day. Then, another coastal storm will come in on Saturday afternoon and last through the day on Sunday. Temps will not rise above the upper 40' s all weekend.

Local alerts: High wind warning in effect for the islands. Wind advisory for the south shore and the cape. Both advisories in effect from midnight until 11 am Friday. Coastal flood warning in effect for the entire mass coastline for Friday. The alerts will likely be needed on Saturday night and Sunday as well.

Weekend forecast:

Tonight: Rain along the coast, rain and wet snow West of 128. Mainly light precip from Boston points north. Also, a stray snowflake is possible around and southwest of the city. A slushy coating is possible west of 495. Lows around 34 in the coldest areas to around 40 on the cape. Turning very windy, with NE winds of around 20-25 MPH with gusts to 55 MPH on the islands, 45 MPH on the south shore and cape, and 35 MPH in Boston and the north shore.

Friday: Rain along the coast, and rain with wet snow West of 128. Rain ending from SW to NE by noon, then drizzle and light showers continuing. Cold and windy. High 41. Saturday night and Sunday: Rain, with wet snowflakes possible in between midnight and 9 am.

Sunday night: Cloudy with rain tapering off in the evening. Low 40.

A freeze, then 2 nor'easters

A freeze is expected to occur across a good portion of Eastern Mass. tonight as temps dip into the upper 20's. As usual, Boston will remain just above the freezing mark. but the city will have our first frost. On Thursday a storm will gather to the south, and will intensify rapidly as it moves NE towards the cape. The storm will come a little closer than I thought yesterday so that means very strong NE winds along the coast, and especially the cape. It also means the wintry mix will be pushed further to the west. Still, some wet snowflakes are still possible north and west of 128 on Friday morning. Temps will struggle to reach 40 on Friday afternoon. Then on Sunday a similar situation is forecasted to happen, but the track of the storm is still uncertain.

Local alerts: Freeze warning for all of the suburbs of Boston. (Except Norfolk county because they have already had a freeze) A frost advisory in effect for Boston and the Cape. Coastal Flood warning for the entire Mass. coast, for some splash over on Friday, as the winds will push water to the coastline. Also, tides are very high at this point in the month. A wind advisory or high wind warning will likely be needed for portions of the coastline on Friday.

Boston area forecast:

Tonight: Frost advisory for the city, freeze warning elsewhere. Low around 35 in Boston, to 31 in JP and about 28 elsewhere.

Thursday: Sunny, then increasing clouds. A chance of a few afternoon showers. Chilly. High 46. Winds turning to the NE around 15 MPH.

Thursday night: Cloudy. Rain all along the coast, including Boston developing by midnight. A mix of rain and snow outside of 128, with little accumulation. Becoming windy. Lows in the mid to upper 30's. NE wind of around 20 MPH, increasing to 25 MPH with gusts to 40 MPH along the coast. About 15-20 MPH with gusts to 30 MPH inland.

Friday: Any wet snowflakes turning quickly to a wind-driven heavy rain. The rain may taper to showers in the afternoon. High 44. Very windy. NE winds of 20-30 MPH with gusts to 55 MPH on the cape, 45 MPH in Boston and the north shore, and 35 MPH inland.

Friday night: Rain ending, wind shifting to the north at around 15-25 MPH. Low 37.

Friday Snow?

It now appears that the storm will go a bit more out to sea then previously thought. If this solution plays out, it would mean a couple of conditions. One, the center of the storm would be further away, so the wind would not as big an issue for inland locations, and even the coast. However, it also means that more cold air will be drawn from the north meaning more of a WINTRY MIX of precipitation, including some periods of all SNOW possible in parts of mass. Some mixing of snow is possible even in the city of Boston. Any wintry mix will turn to rain by early Friday afternoon, as temps rise into the low and mid 40's. This forecasted track also means that there would be less precip in Western and Central mass. and northern New England. However, the bigger storm may be on Sunday with heavy downpours and very windy conditions possible, as another storm comes up the coast. The second storm is forecasted to be stronger and come closer to the area. However, it is still to early to exactly determine how each storm will effect the region.

Local forecast;

Tonight: Freeze possible in all suburbs, and a frost possible in parts of the City of Boston. Lows ranging from 37 Downtown to 34 in JP, and 28 in most places outside of the city. A

Wednesday: Bright and sunny, but bundle up at the bust stop as it will be Cold in the morning with wind gusting to 20 MPH, and then temps rising to around 50 by afternoon.

Wednesday night: Clear. A hard freeze likely in the suburbs with lows in the 20's. A frost advisory likely will be needed for the City, with a low around 35 Downtown, and about 31 in JP.

Thursday: Cool with increasing clouds. High around 46. Normal for mid -November.

Friday Nor'easter?

It will be a cold week overall, with temps mainly in the 40's to near 50 most of the week. There will be some showers Tuesday morning, but the bigger storm is on Friday. A storm will be forming near the Tennessee valley, and working northeastward towards Long Island, NY. Then it will scoot south of the Cape on Friday afternoon as it rapidly intensifies. On Friday, cold air will be in place, the question is will it be cold enough for wintry precip in the suburbs well NW of Boston. At this point heavy precipitation, and strong winds out of the NE seem certain from the Boston area points SE. If the storm comes close to Cape, it would bring even stronger winds and heavy rain to the coastline. Also, enough cold air may be in place for an icing situation in Worcester points north and west. That track might bring blizzard conditions to Central New England (Southern VT, NH and ME). If it tracks farther to the south, it would bring a wind driven cold rain to the coast, but the precip might not reach places where it is cold enough for snow. Then, a second storm is forecasted to form near the Carolina coast, then move NE towards the cape on Saturday. The storm on Friday seems more likely to occur at this point, but both systems will need to be watched.

Local forecast:

Tonight: Clouding up with showers arriving around dawn. Lows around 40.

Tuesday: Showers until 1 pm, then a changable sky of sun and clouds. High 54. SW wind of 10-20 MPH, shifting to NW at 15-25 MPH with gusts to 35 MPH in the afternoon.

Tuesday night: Clearing, lows near 34 in the coldest areas to 40 in Boston. NW wind of 15-20 MPH with gusts to 30 MPH in the evening, then decreasing.

Wedensday: Bright and sunny and breezy. High around 50. Gusty NW wind of 10-25 MPH.

Wednesday night: Lows around 30 in the Suburbs to around 38 Downtow. A freeze is possible.

Frost Advisory

A frost advisory has been issued for tonight for most of the Bay State, except the City of Boston and the Cape. A freeze warning is in effect for western Mass. Temps are expected to drop below the freezing mark in most suburbs as the wind diminishes. Even in areas like Arlington and Cambridge temps will dip into the mid 30's, allowing for patchy frost. I suggest you bring your plants inside tonight.

Local forecast:

Today: Sunny, high 60. West wind around 15 MPH with gusts to 30 MPH. Delightful for the Red Sox game at Fenway.

Tonight: Clear with the wind diminishing. Lows ranging from around 40 in Boston to around 37 in JP, and about 30 in most suburbs. Frost advisory in effect from 2 Am- 8 AM Monday. Patchy frost is possible in West Roxbury and Hyde park.

Monday: Sunny, and then increasing clouds in the afternoon. High 57. NW winds of 10-15 MPH.

Monday night: Clouding up, with showers likely by morning. Lows in the low to mid 40's.

Tuesday: Showers in the morning with temps rising to around 50, then falling in to the mid 40's in the afternoon. Some rain may end as snow in SW NH, and the rest of nothern New Enlgand. Some peaks of sun in the afernoon behind the system. SW wind turning NW at 10-15 MPH.

Tuesday night: Clearing with lows in the 30's.

Saturday, October 10, 2009

Gusty Winds

The wind has been quite gusty out of the NW today, as cooler air comes in behind the system from last night. A frost is possible tonight in the normal colder locations away from Boston. It will remain sunny through the holiday weekend before a weak storm approaches with rain showers on Tuesday. Cooler air will continue to come into New England behind the weak system, as the city of Boston will likely have its first frost either Wednesday or Thursday night.
A freeze is also likely in the suburbs both nights.

Local alerts: Frost advisory for Western mass, and SW NH overnight tonight. The advisory may inch closer to the city later tonight. I suggest you bring your plants indoors in the Boston area Sunday night, as a frost is LIKELY.

Tonight: Clearing, with lows around 42 in Boston to 39 in JP and around 35 in the coldest suburbs. Frost is possible. West wind of 10-15 MPH will help keep temps from falling below the freezing mark.

Sunday: Sunny, high 58. West wind of 10-15 MPH with gusts to 25. A classic fall day for possibly the last Red Sox game at Fenway. Also, it will feel cold in the early morning.

Sunday night: Clear, low around 40 in Boston to 36 IN JP, and near freezing in most suburbs. Frost is likely in all areas, except Downtown Boston. Also, frost is possible in JP, West Roxbury, and Hyde park and temps dip into the mid 30's.

Monday: Sunny, high 56. Light West wind.

Monday night: Partly cloudy early, then becoming mostly cloudy. Lows in the 40's.

Weather news: The game between the Phillies and Colorado Rockies has been postponed because of forecasted temps in the 20's and snow showers. Also, 10 inches of snow fell in some parts of Nebraska this morning, as a cold air grips the plains and Rockies. Meanwhile, the tropics remain quiet.

No Snow for now

It now appears that the storm will come more from the west, meaning that the jet stream will be different than previously thought. The jet stream is main mover of storms and air masses. The air will be coming more from the west, than the north-meaning a smaller storm, and warmer temps. If the the jet stream dips to (to form a u shape) , that means the storm would dip into the mid-Atlantic states and come up the coast. That would allow the storm to re-generate over the ocean, as cold air comes down from the north into the "u." However, now it appears that just a few showers will fall on Tuesday with temps in the 50's.

Weekend forecast:

Tonight: Drizzle and light showers until midnight, then rain. Some heaver showers may have embedded lightning. Fog may also form in certain areas. Temps holding steady, then rising to around 60.

Saturday: Starting off cloudy with a risk of a shower, then sunny. Windy. High 67. NW winds of 15-25 MPH with gusts to 35 MPH.

Saturday night: Clear with the wind diminishing. Lows around 45 Downtown to 42 in JP, to 35 in most suburbs. Frost is possible in the usual colder locations.

Sunday: Mostly sunny and a bit cooler. High 61. West wind of 10-25 MPH.

Sunday night: Clear, lows ranging from 42 in Boston to 34 outside the city. Frost is more likely than Saturday night, but not definite.

Monday: Mostly sunny, high 58. Cool NW wind.

Monday night: Clouding up with lows around 40.

US weather: A major arctic blast is occurring in the Plains and Rockies. Temps in Montana today did not make it out of the 20's, and lows were around 0! It should be windy and cold while the Pats play in Denver on Sunday, but not as cold as previous days with temps holding in the 40's. Snow showers and temps in the upper 20's is in the forecast for game 3 of the NLDS as the Colorado Rockies host the Phillies on Saturday night. A piece of the arctic air is coming this way, as the city of Boston may have its first frost late next week. However, temps will modify before some of the air mass gets here.

Storm?

The latest guidance suggests that the storm coming up the coast will be weak, therefore only light precip will fall on Monday night and Tuesday morning. Temps Monday night will be in the 30's, but the exact temp will depend on the type of precip in the Boston area. The big question is how much cold air can come down from the north on Monday before the precip starts falling. Behind the system, winds will pick up and temps will fall, as on Tuesday it may not make it out of low 50's. It will feel quite cold for this time of year.

Local news: Peak wind gust of 54 MPH occurred in Fall River on Wednesday. Peak wind gust in Boston of 45 MPH, and Lawrence had a gust to 50 MPH.

Local forecast:

Tonight: Becoming cloudy, with lows around 50 In Boston and around 45 in most suburbs.

Friday: Mostly cloudy with showers likely in the afternoon. Highs ranging from 58 NW of Boston to 62 in the city, to around 68 in SE mass. South winds of 10-20 MPH with gusts to 25 MPH.

Friday night: Rain. Some rain may be moderate at times. Low's in the 50's. South wind about 10 MPH, shifting to West.

Saturday: Mostly cloudy. High 66. Breezy with winds of NW winds of 10-20 MPH.

Saturday night: Clearing, lows around 42 in the city, and the 30's elsewhere. Frost possible.

Sunday: Mostly sunny, with temps recovering from a cold start. Highs around 60.

Sunday night: Clear, with lows in the low 40's in the city, and 30's elsewhere.

Columbus Day: Sunny in the morning, then becoming mostly cloudy. Cool with highs in the mid 50's.

Henri, cold front, and then...SNOW?

Henri has formed in the Atlantic with winds as of 5 PM of 40 MPH. This tropical storm is located northeast of the Virgin Islands, and is expected to move to the WNW at around 15 MPH. However, Henri is not expected to threaten any land, as the storm is expected to fall apart over the next couple days.

Local alerts: Wind advisory remains in effect until 10 PM tonight. There have been many reports of wires down, and even a couple of trees have fallen.

Local weather: It will be sunny and breezy for tomorrow with temps in the low 60's, then a strong cold front will approach from the west. This front will produce showers on Friday afternoon into friday night. It will clear out for Saturday and Sunday. Temps will be in the 60's on Saturday, and the upper 50's on Sunday. Then it gets complicated, so I will do my best to guide you through the forecast. A storm is forecasted from near the Delaware coast on Sunday, as a cold air drains in to New England at the same time. Then, the storm will track north and intenisfy rapidly as it comes close to the cape on Monday night. This is a classic winter nor'easter setup, however it is only October. At this early point, 2 things seem likely: some type of precipitation, and strong winds on Monday night and Tuesday. In this case, the exact track is very key. A track over SE Mass would bring all rain to most of Mass, and the snow would only fall over the northern mountains. Another senario, would bring cold winds and light precip. to eastern New Enlgand. That means a storm track well out to sea, where the storm would just graze us. In between is the most likely option. This potential nor'easter will need to be watched very closely for the potential of an early season snowfall over some parts of New England.

Wachy Wednesday

A strange Wednesday is on tap with showers and thunderstorms in the morning, followed by winds gusting to 45 MPH in the afternoon behind the storm. The gusty winds will dry out the area by mid afternoon, and some breaks of sun are likely. Winds will remain gusty through Wednesday evening, making it tough for my ultimate Frisbee game tomorrow.

Local alerts: Wind advisory in effect from 12-8 PM Wednesday for all of Mass. The winds will be the strongest between 12 and 3 pm. Also, some thunderstorms in the morning may produce gusty winds.

Local forecast:
Tonight: Partly cloudy, then a chance of showers after midnight. Low around 50.

Wednesday: Showers with thunderstorms until noon, then some sunny breaks in the afternoon. There is still a chance of a shower or 2 in the afternoon. High 65. South winds of 10-15 MPH in the morning, then shifting to West and increasing to 20-30 MPH with gusts to 45 MPH in the afternoon. Some thunderstorms may produce frequent lightning and gusty winds in the morning.

Wednesday: Clearing out, lows mostly in the upper 40's to around 50 in Boston. Gusty West winds of 15-25 MPH until around 11 PM. Then the winds will gradually decrease.

Thursday: Sunny, high around 66. SW wind will once again increase to 15-20 MPH with gusts to 30 MPH, then decrease to 10-15 MPH in the afternoon.

Thursday night: Clear, lows ranging from 41 outside of 128 to around 50 in Boston.

Tropics: An organized area of thunderstorms is expected to become Tropical Storm Henri at 5PM AST tonight. It is located around 500 miles east of the Leeward islands. Tropical storm grace fizzled out near the Irish coast. Meanwhile, Typhoon Melor still has winds of 130 MPH as it bears down on Japan. It now looks like the storm will pass well to the west of the major city of Tokyo. That would spare the big city of the strongest winds, but it would still get some strong wind gusts. The rain would be the bigger issue, with up to 15 inches near Tokyo.

Monday, October 5, 2009

World weather: Tropical Storm Grace has formed in the Atlantic. However, it is about 500 miles SW of IRELAND, moving rapidly in their direction. Maximum winds of 60 MPH., and it is moving NE at 31 MPH. The storm is expected to lose tropical characteristics as the storm gets absorbed by a cold front just off the Ireland coast tomorrow. However, wind and rain can still be expect in the British Isles over the next couple of days. Meanwhile, major typhoon Melor with winds of 155 MPH is expected to take a turn to the North and come dangerously close to Tokyo on Wednesday night (EDT). However, winds at that point are expected to be under 100 MPH. Still, precautions are already being taken because flooding rains and damaging winds are expected.

Local weather: This afternoon, isolated showers formed including one that formed just to the NW of Boston, then came right through the city at around 3 this afternoon. They formed because of a stalled front over southern Canada, then drifted SE. Tuesday will be nice, then a storm with rain and wind will come through on Wednesday.

Local forecast:

Tonight: Clear, lows around 48 downtown, to 45 in JP, and the low 40's for the suburbs. West wind around 15 MPH.

Tuesday: Sunny, high 69. West wind of 10-20 MPH.

Tuesday night: Increasing clouds with showers likely after midnight. Low 50.

Wednesday: Showers, then cloudy after 1 pm. West wind of 10-15 MPH, increasing to 15-25 MPH with gusts to 35 MPH after the rain ends. High 63.

Wednesday night: Clearing out, and remaining windy. Low around 50. West wind of 15- 20 MPH with gusts to 30 MPH in the evening, decreasing to about 15 MPH after midnight.
