World weather: A 8.3 magnitude earthquake has hit about 125 miles southwest of American Somoa, which is east of Australlia, at around 130 PM EDT. This is classified as a major earthquake. A tsunami warning has been issued for the islands of New Zealand, Fiji, and some other small pacific islands. A tsunami watch was issued for Hawaii. However, there is NO tsunami warning for the Australian coastline. In American Somoa, there are reports that a 10 FT Tsunami wave is already heading towards the island. Evacuations are underway in American Somoa as the earthquake has shook the buildings. The tsunami is not expected to reach the United States west coast.

One Last Day
Today will be the last warm day for the next week. Expect temps to reach in the mid and upper 70's with a breeze. However, the wind will shift to the NE tonight, ushering in cool and cloudy conditions to southern portions of New England as a cold front goes past us, then stalls to the south However, at the same time high pressure will try to come down from Canada behind the cold front. It will never really make it to the Boston area until the weekend, but there will be a sharp cutoff between clouds to the south and sun across northern New England.

Cool and Dreary
Wow! The storm really intensified last night. It started looking like a tropical system, and not real sure why it was not named. Steady winds of close to 50 MPH with gusts over 60 were reported in the southern New Jersey area. It dumped close to 5 inches of rain near Philly as it slowly moved onshore early this morning along the Jersey coast. The storm has slowly drifted northward, and is directly over New York City. The storm is expected to move back over the open waters of the Atlantic, and move just south of Nantucket. The storm is expected to lose strength during the day tomorrow, but still spread rain northwards into southern New England. The wind will continue to gust to around 30 MPH on Cape and islands, and possibly close to 25 in the Boston area. However, the wind will not be a huge issue. Because of an east flow it will stay showery and breezy here through early Sunday.
Red Sox forecast: Showers tonight, windy. Make sure to bring the rain gear. Temps around 60. Expect at least a delay. Tomorrow-the field will still be wet, but the rain should be over.
Expect some rains for soccer practice, and the field will be wet. Maybe some heavy pockets of rain, especially over SE mass. However, it depends on your towns exact rules if it is cancelled or not.
Weekend forecast:
Tonight: Showers, Breezy. NE wind 10-20 MPH with gusts to around 30 MPH. Low 59. Patchy fog.
Saturday: Showers, Breezy. NE wind 10-20 MPH with gusts to 30 mph. High 62. Patchy fog.
Saturday night: Raw. Cloudy with mist and drizzle, low 58. NE wind 10-15 MPH.
Sunday: Foggy and drizzly in the morning, then slow clearing. High 71. NE, shifting to SW 5-10 MPH.
Tropical Update: Fred was a major hurricane, and now has fizzled to a tropical storm with 70 MPH winds. The storm is still about 800 miles off the cost of Africa, not expected to threaten any land. Watching thunderstorms off the coast of Texas for possible development.

Major nor'easter- in Jersey
The storm has gathered strength again off the coast of New Jersey, and has started to drift west. It will produce heavy rainfall and wind gusts to around 55 MPH or so along the New Jersey and Maryland coast. Then the storm will be pushed by a SW flow towards Nantucket, but at the same time be falling apart by early Saturday. Expect some showers and wind here, but not a huge storm.
Local alerts/news: High surf advisory in effect from 10AM to 8PM tomorrow for the islands. Rip currents can be expected. Be sure to stay out of the water along the south coast. There was frost in parts of New Hampshire (NH), Maine (ME), and Vermont (VT) last night. Locally, temps dropped to 39 in Norwood, MA last night, and 42 in Taunton and Bedford. In JP (Jamaica Plain) temps dropped to 50.
Boston area forecast:
Tonight: Clouds coming in, low 54 in Boston, and 50 in suburbs. NE wind 10-15 MPH.

Saturday: Cloudy, breezy, and cool with some showers and mist around. High 64. NE wind 10-20 MPH.
Saturday night: Clearing is expected after midnight, low dropping to 56.

Nor'easter?
The major storm as of yesterday at this time has fallen apart. There are some light showers around the mid-atlantic states, but that is it for the rain. The storm has also not moved at all over the last day and so the rain for the Boston area is pushed back a day, if it all. However, the wind is still gusty. A wind gust of 31 MPH from the Northeast (NE) was recored earlier this afternoon at Logan. Even stronger winds are being recorded on the New Jersey shoreline. The gusty winds are expected to continue through Friday. The low pressure may regather strength as it heads towards land. The models are still not agreeing. Some models have the storm gaining strength, (a tropical cyclone is highly unlikely) and slowly churning northwards towards the Boston area. That would produce heavy rain and wind gusts to 35 MPH on the coast. Other models have the storm not ganging strength much, and slowly brushing past the cape. That outcome would produce some light showers, and winds gusting to around 25 MPH. There is even a 3rd possibility. This model has the storm gathering strength tonight, and moving West and then Northwest towards Philly and producing heavy rains there. The storm would eventually get pushed here by another weak system, but it would be just some showers late friday. The most likely outcome at this point is somewhere in between the first and second possibility. Either way, it will be cool and cloudy. Expect temps to only reach the low 60's the next 2 days.
Local forecast:
Tonight: Partly cloudy, low 54 in Boston and 46 in suburbs. NE wind 10-20 MPH
Thursday: Some sun in the morning, becoming cloudy by 2 pm. Cool. High 62. Gusty NE wind of 15-25 MPH with gusts to 30 MPH, and gusting to 35 MPH on Cape.
Thursday night: Cloudy until 3am, then a chance of showers. NE wind of 10-20 MPH with gusts to 30 MPH. Low 57.
Friday: Showers likely, some of the rainfall could be heavy. Cool. High 61. NE wind of 15-25 MPH with gusts to 30 MPH, decreasing to 10-20 MPH with gusts to 25 MPH. The wind may stay gusty on the Cape.
Saturday: Some rain is possible in the morning, otherwise expect slow clearing by mid afternoon. High closing in on 70. The winds will die down.

Cool
Today was cool with temps only reaching 64 at Logan. However, the sun will continue to shine until at least Wednesday. There is a a storm forming off the South Carolina coast. It may try to form into a Tropical Storm later this week as it spins and spins in the very warm water. At this point, it is not very organized at all. Either way, it will crawl up the coast towards Nantucket by the end of the week. Something to keep an eye on for this week. Otherwise, expect great conditions.
Local Forecast
Tonight: Clear and cool- low 53 in downtown Boston , about 49 in JP and about 45 outside the main urban centers.
Labor day: Sunny, light Sea breeze. High 67 at the coast and about 74 west of route 495.

Great weather is ahead, including for Labor day weekend. ! Low humidity and temps in the 70's can be expected. However, there is a storm system to the south and heavy rain is falling just south of Long Island. Some sprinkles may try to sneak on to the Cape and Islands over the next few days. The big High pressure system (means good weather) over us should protect us from any big storms for at least the next week.
Local news: The low this morning on the Vineyard was 41. We are now back in JP.
Local forecast:
Today: Partly to mostly sunny, high 77. Light sea breeze. It may become cloudy for a time in SE Mass.
