We have now recorded 4.75 inches of rain here in JP, but much more to the south and SW of Boston. The rain has caused catastrophic flooding in SE mass and RI. Rivers are as much as 7-8 FT above flood stage. Backyards are ponds and streets are rivers throughout the area. Also, Jamaica pond is over the rocks and onto the path in places, and one bench is submerged. Ward's and leverett's pond is way over its banks again, as benches and trash cans along the path are a good 5 feet underwater.
The heaviest rain has ended, but bands will occasionally come in off the ocean and up from the south overnight and Wednesday morning. Then summer like weather will come in for Easter weekend.

Records have been broken: Most rain ever in a month in Providence, RI with nearly 16 inches of rain in March. In Boston we are now up to 14.2 inches for the month, which is second place since record keeping began back in the 1800's! The highest monthly total ever occurred in August of 1955 when we had back to back Hurricanes. The total that month was around 17
inches, so that will unlikely be broken.

After reading that this month in second place for the record, my first thought was "maybe we can get another 3 inches by tomorrow and win!" On second thought, enough!
ReplyDeleteThe Bussey Brook in the Arboretum was a raging torrent tonight, and the usually damp wetlands in the South Street wilds (by the Blackwell Footpath) were flooded to the point that you could go kayaking. A BWSC truck was there, but I'm not sure what they were doing.
If all the rain we've had this month had been snow, how many inches would there have been?
ReplyDeleteIf it was all snow it would have been around 8-10 FEET of snow!
