Snow Squall!
We got our squall in JP at about 615 PM, as the snow suddenly turned heavy, and it turned very windy as well. The snow coated the ground, but then it ended. Once the squall line made it to 128 it faded a little so it was a very quick, but intense squall in Boston. Now, with that frontal passage the skies will clear, and the winds will pick up. Temps will fall dramatically and be at around 10 by morning. With winds gusting over 40 MPH, it will feel like 10 below. Highs will only recover to the mid to upper teens- frigid weather for my pickup ACC football game.
Alert: A Wind Advisory is in effect until 5 AM for wind gusts to 50 MPH.
Tonight: A chance of a snow shower early, then rapid clearing and turning very cold and windy. Lows near 12 Downtown, 10 in JP and 8 in the suburbs. NW winds of 25-35 MPH with gusts to 50 MPH.
Friday: Sunny, frigid and very windy. High 17. NW wind of 20-30 MPH with gusts to 45 MPH. Wind chill values as low as 10 below before 9 AM, and remaining near 0 all day.
Friday night: Coldest night of the season so far. Clear, with lows near 5 Downtown, 3 in JP and below 0 in the suburbs.
Saturday: Sunny, but still frigid. High 22. NW wind of 15-25 MPH. Wind chill values as low as 15 below before 9 AM, and a max value of 5 above.
Sunday: Sunny, and still very cold. Highs near 25.
Snow update
The snow started just after noon and it is still snowing as of 2 PM. This round will come to an end at around 3 PM. Then we will have a break, and then a squall line will come through between 5 and 7 PM. Expect wind gusts over 40 MPH, and near whiteout conditions with these squalls. The first batch will drop up to an inch- mainly on the grass. But, with the second round the temp will drop allowing for 1-2 inches in a brief period of time where the squalls hit. After the squalls end, the temp will dramatically drop and the wind will pick up. Wind chills will drop below 0 by morning, as air temps will be around 15.
Alerts:
A wind advisory is in effect from 7 tonight thru Friday for wind gusts to 50 MPH.

Snow Squalls
A strong arctic front will cross the region on Thursday afternoon bringing the threat of snow squalls. A snow squall is just like a thunderstorm in the summer. Not every town will see one, but the ones who do will get strong winds and near whiteout conditions for a brief period of time. The squalls may put down a quick inch or 2 in less than an hour. These squalls are possible anytime after 3 PM. Friday will be frigid with temps not reaching 20, and with the wind gusting to 40 MPH it will feel at or below 0 all day! The potential nor'easter for Saturday is a miss at this point.
Boston, MA forecast:
Tonight: Clear, lows near 30 in Boston, 27 in JP and 24 in the suburbs.
Thursday: Sunny early, then cloudy with snow squalls likely after 3 PM. Highs near 35. SW wind of 10-15 MPH with gusts to 30 MPH.

Arctic front Thursday
Wednesday will be a nice day with sunny skies and temps near 40. Most of Thursday will be fine as well, until evening when a strong cold front arrives. Snow showers and snow squalls will accompany the front, and these squalls are capable of putting down a inch or 2 in a half hour or so. However, not all locations will receive a snow squall. Then Friday will be bitterly cold, with sunny skies temps will struggle to reach 20! Then, a powerful ocean storm will make a close pass to the region on Saturday. However, at this point it is a miss.
Boston, MA forecast:
Tonight: Mostly cloudy before midnight, then partly cloudy. Lows near 30 Downtown, 28 in JP and 25 in the suburbs.
Wednesday: A mix of sun and clouds, highs near 40. West winds of 10-20 MPH.

Thursday: Sunny until 3 PM, then a chance of snow squalls. Highs in the upper 30's, but falling into the low 30's after 3 PM.
Thursday night: A chance of a snow squall before 9 PM, then clearing. Turning very cold with lows in the teens.
Friday: Sunny, but frigid. Highs in the upper teens. Wind chill values near 0 all day.

Wild Monday
A storm that originated in California will come across the country and pass to the NW of us giving the region a soaking rain and mild temps. South winds gusting to 50 MPH will push temps into the 50's on Monday afternoon. Heavy rain may amount over 2 inches, and that combined with the melting snow may create flooding problems. Cold air in place at the start of the storm may allow for some sleet or freezing rain north and west of 128 on Sunday night, but it would be brief.
Alert: Flash Flood Watch in effect for Sunday night into Monday for all of Mass.
Boston, MA forecast:
Tonight: Clear and frigid. Lows near 20 in downtown Boston, 16 in JP and in the upper single numbers NW of 128.
Sunday: Becoming cloudy, highs in the mid 30's. Little or no wind.

Monday: Heavy rain and thunderstorms until 11 AM, then showers continuing. Very windy and warm, highs in the mid 50's. South winds of 25-35 MPH with gusts to 50 MPH.

Wet storm Monday
The same storm that has been setting records in California will come across the nation and hit us on Sunday night into Monday. However, the storm will pass to the west allowing for strong southerly winds to rise temps well into the 50's! We may pick up 2 inches of rain Sunday night and Monday and along with the melting snow it will create flooding. Until then, sunny skies and near normal temps will continue.
Boston, MA forecast:
Tonight: Clear and frigid. Lows near 24 Downtown, 21 in JP and in the low to mid teens elsewhere.
Friday: Bright blue skies in the morning, then more clouds for the afternoon. High 36. NE wind of 10-20 MPH.

The California barrage continues: Snow totals have now reached over 6 feet at some of the ski resorts. The greatest snowfall total reported so far has been 75 inches on Mammoth Mt. in the Sierras. Rainfall has exceeded 10 inches in some hilly locations just east of LA, as people are being evacuated because of devastating mudslides. Wind gusts to 80 MPH continue in southern Cal and Arizona, causing major damage. Also, Palm Springs, CA has received 50% of its average rainfall for the entire year in the last 4 days! Another storm is expected Friday and Saturday, although the heaviest rain may be over after tonight.

Warmer
It now appears that we will need to scale the snow totals down a bit, especially in Boston. Temps rose above 40 this afternoon, and it is still 38 at Logan as of 9 PM. Cold air should come down from the north after Midnight, changing the rain to snow everywhere except extreme SE mass. The snow should come to an end around 10 AM.
Revised amounts (inches): Could be less if temps don't drop as quickly as expected.
1-3: A line from Hull to Providence. Including Taunton, Marshfield, and Brockton.
3-6: A line from the immediate Boston along the pike to South of Worcester. Around 4 in JP. Including Norwood, Walpole, Foxborough, Medford.
6-10: North and west of 128. Most areas will come in around 8 inches. Including Bedford, Lowell, Worcester, Topsfield.
Another update in the morning.

Tough Call
Temps have risen to around 40 this afternoon as the storm approaches. However, there is a strong cold front just to the north, and temps in southern Maine are in the low 20's. Once the front makes it to MA at around 4 PM, temps will start dropping. The rain will start in Boston at around 5 PM, and continue heavy at times until midnight. Some snow may mix in NW of Route 495. Then the forecast becomes tricky, because 1 or 2 degrees will mean the difference between wet snow or a cold rain. At this point I think the snow line will collapse quickly towards the coast after midnight. Then, the wet snow will fall heavily in the Boston area from around 2 AM until 10 AM Monday morning; however, the rain/snow line will never make it to the Cape. It will be windy as well, with gusts over 40 MPH Monday morning.
Timeline for Sunday night and Monday: Temps in the low to mid 30's.
5 PM: The rain arrives. some wet snowflakes may mix in.
11 PM: Rain changes to snow NW of Route 128.
2 AM: Changes to all snow in Boston. Becoming windy.
4 AM: Changes to snow on south shore.
5 Am- 10 Am: Snow, heavy at times. North winds gusting over 40 MPH.
After 10 AM: Scattered snow and rain showers.
Amounts: Could be less if temps don't drop as fast as expected.
A slushy inch or 2: Southern sections of the south shore a line From Plymouth to RI.
2-4: Just South and southwest of 128. A line from Hull to just north of Providence. Areas like Norwood, Sharon, Walpole.
4-8: A line from From Cape Ann through the immediate Boston area to Framingham to south of Worcester. About 6 inches in JP. Including areas like Medford, Lincoln, Sudbury, Beverly, Topsfield.
8-10: A line from Lowell to Worcester. North and West of 495. Including areas like: Stow, Littleton, Fitchburg.

Track shift
It now appears that the storm will track a bit further south than thought yesterday. That allows cold air to drain down from the north and that will change any rain over to snow. The heaviest snow will fall between 1 and 10 AM Monday morning. It will be very heavy and wet, so it will cause some power outages. NE winds will increase to 20-30 MPH with gusts to 45 MPH along the coast after midnight as well.
Timeline for Sunday night and Monday: Temps in the low to mid 30's during the storm.
5 PM: Rain overspreading the area, some mix NW of 128.
8 PM: The rain becomes steady in Boston. Changes to snow in Worcester.
11 PM: Rain starts to change over to snow inside of 128.
2 AM Monday: Changes to all snow in Boston, and points north and west. Still rain on South Shore.
8 AM: Snow continuing, heavy at times.
Noon Monday: Steady snow tapers to snow showers.
Amounts (inches): Could easily change again if track shifts.
1-3: A line from the south shore west to RI. Including areas like Plymouth, Weymouth, Taunton, Providence.
3-6: A line from the immediate Boston area to Foxborough. Includes cities like Medford, Cambridge, and Newton. About 4 inches in JP.
6-10+: North and west of 128. Including areas like Bedford, Concord, Sudbury, Lowell.

Rain or snow?
Another mild day is in store for tomorrow with sunny skies and temps in the mid and upper 40's. Then a storm will come up the coast on Sunday, with precip overspreading the area by nightfall. It will start as rain, then gradually change to snow from NW to SE. It now appears that temps will be a bit warmer during the storm than thought yesterday, so the changeover will take longer. That will cut down on snowfall totals in Boston. In the Boston area 1-3 inches are expected with 3-6 NW of 495, and 6-8 in southern NH. This could easily change, so stay tuned for details.
Local forecast:

Cold Weekend
The snow band that was supposed to come through the Boston area this morning missed the city and and went to the south shore. It snowed on the south shore and the Cape most of the morning, amounting to around an inch. After a snow shower at around 8AM this morning in Brighton, we had a break from the snow. The sun even came out around lunch time, making it seem like there was no more snow to come. But, the second piece came through this afternoon and put down a coating to an inch in most spots.
Local Forecast:
Tonight: Scattered snow showers until 10PM, then clearing and becoming breezy. An additional coating is possible, especially on the Cape. Lows in the mid teens.

Sunday: Sunny in the morning, then some more clouds in the afternoon. Still cold and breezy. High 26. NW wind of 10-20 MPH. Wind chill values as low as 10 below in the morning.
The cold in the south continues: The high in New Orleans today was only 34, and a hard freeze is expected all the way to the gulf coast tonight. In Atlanta snowflakes fell last night, and the high today did not make it out of the 20's. There is a wind chill advisory in effect for Miami, FL as temps there are expected to drop as low as 35! In Brownsville, Tx, right on the mexican border, temps did not make it out of the 30's, and a Freeze Warning is in effect for most of southern TX.
