Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas everyone and thanks for checking out my blog from Trapp Family lodge here in Stowe, VT. We are here to go skiing until Wednesday, and I hope everyone has a safe holiday season. We are following a storm for Sunday night into Monday, as always it depends on the track. At this point a significant nor'easter seems likely with some heavy snow and strong winds. possible. However, a small shift to the east would leave the Boston area with very little snow. Meanwhile a track slightly west of what is now expected would leave Boston buried under more than a Foot of snow. I am currently taking a middle road, with significant snow amounts possible. I will give my initial snow totals tomorrow-if all goes according to plan.

Boston, MA Christmas forecast:

Christmas Eve: Clear flying for Santa. Jolly with lows near 2o.

Christmas Day: Sunny for opening presents, then increasing clouds for dinner time. High 32. North wind of 10-15 MPH. Merry Christmas everyone, hope you have a safe and joyous holiday!

Christmas Night: Cloudy with lows in the low 20's.

Sunday: Cloudy with snow possible by dark. Highs around 30.

Sunday night and Monday: At this point a strong nor'easter seems likely, but it all depends on the exact track of the coastal low. Temps in the mid to upper 20's. Stay tuned for snow amounts Tomorrow!

Off To Vermont

Tomorrow we are headed to Trapp Family lodge for Christmas break to go skiing. Before that, snow will continue into Thursday morning amounting to a few inches. The snow will continue through the morning commute, so I would leave extra time to get to work and school. Dry weather will move in to the area for Christmas Eve and Day. Then, a major nor'easter is possible on the 26th into the 27th. If it looks like we will have significant snow I will update from Stowe.

Boston, MA forecast:

Tonight: Periods of snow. Low 29. NW wind of 15-20 MPH. (Snow amounts on Thurs)

Thursday: Snow until 10 AM, then cloudy. High 37. North wind of 15-25 MPH. Total snow amounts of 1-3 inches expected. We head to Stowe, VT for break.

Thursday night: Some clearing with lows in the mid 20's.

Friday: Mostly sunny with highs in the mid 30's.

6 FEET of lake effect snow has buried Syracuse, NY over the past few weeks.

The storm that was expected to go out to sea, stalled earlier than expected and backed west. That brought a foot of snow to the Cape and Islands today, and some snow to the Boston area. More snow now is likely for Wednesday, with amounts still in question.

Some Snow

A big ocean storm will graze the Boston area with light snow and snow showers over the next few days. We may pick up a few inches thru Wednesday- not a huge deal. The most snow may fall in SE MA where a several inches are possible. Keep in mind just a small shift either west or east would change this. At this point I am not expecting a major snowfall.

Boston, MA forecast:

Tonight: Scattered snow showers and light snow. Low 27. NE wind of 15-20 MPH. A coating to an inch of snow is expected in most areas from Boston and points south.

A 180

The models that were showing a major snowstorm for Sunday into Monday have done a 180-now sending almost the entire storm out sea. Of course, this in set in stone either-but it does seem likely at this point that the Boston area will only receive snow showers. At this point a small amount of snow is possible. After the storm passes east of us, it will stall south of SE Canada, and we may get some backlash snow on Tuesday into Wednesday- but that seems to be minor also. Stay tuned for more track updates this weekend.

Boston, MA forecast:

Tonight: The first night at home for the holidays will be cold and clear. Lows near 20 in Boston and teens in the suburbs.

Saturday: A great winter day with sunny skies and a high of 37. Very little wind.

Saturday night: Some clouds late. Lows around 20.

Sunday: Partly sunny until 1 PM, then cloudy with flurries or snow showers possible. Highs in the mid 30's.

Sunday night: Depending on the exact track of the storm some light snow or flurries are possible. Lows in the mid 20's. Stay tuned!

Monday: Scattered snow showers and flurries-especially in the morning. Highs in the mid 30's. A small amount of snow is possible based on the current projected track.

Classic Setup

A major winter storm will likely effect the area Sunday Thru Monday with the potential for a lot of snow. Models have seemed to come to a general agreement-the storm tracking nearly perfectly for a classic southern New England blizzard. Of course, a slight shift west would bring mild air in off the ocean-changing the snow to rain for a time in Boston. For now, sleet and rain would be confined to SE MA and the Cape and islands. Also, NE winds will gust past 50 MPH causing near blizzard conditions for most of Sunday night along with blowing and drifting. I will give my initial amounts tomorrow, but at this point a major snowfall seems likely.

Boston, MA forecast:

Tonight: Partly to mostly cloudy. Lows near 20 in Boston and teens in the suburbs.

Friday: Headed home for the holidays! Sunny with a high of 35. West wind of 10-15 MPH.

Friday night: Clear with lows in the teens.

Saturday: Sunny with highs in the mid 30's.

Saturday night: Increasing clouds with lows in the low 20's.

Sunday: Snow arriving in the mid morning and becoming heavy by afternoon. Highs around freezing as the wind picks up. Major snow accumulation possible.

Sunday night and Monday: Blizzard conditions are possible into Monday afternoon. Additional major snow amounts possible. Temps in the upper 20's.

Wednesday, December 15, 2010

Nor'easter Sunday?

Temps will rebound to around freezing the next few days, along with increasing sunshine by Friday and Saturday. As a storm on Friday dumps snow on DC and Baltimore, we got nothing again. Snow pack is surrounding the Boston area-to our north, west and south over the last week or so. Finally, a powerful nor'easter will pass close to the area and will POSSIBLY dump snow in our area late Sunday into Monday. The exact track is still in question, and that makes all the difference. A track to further east would give some snow just to the Cape and islands, while a track further west would bring rain into the equation. Stay tuned for more updates over the next few days.

Boston, MA forecast:

Tonight: Mainly cloudy with a snow shower possible. Lows near 18 in Boston, 16 in JP and 12 in the suburbs. A dusting is possible.

Thursday: Mainly cloudy with scattered flurries again, but warmer and less breezy. High 32. SW wind of 5-10 MPH.

Thursday night: Some clearing with lows around 20.

Friday: Clouds break for sunshine for my trip back home for the holidays. Highs in the mid 30's.

Saturday: Sunny followed by increasing clouds late with highs in the mid 30's.

Sunday: Cloudy with snow and wind possible in the afternoon as a nor'easter makes a close pass to the area. Highs in the low 30's. Stay tuned!

Still waiting here too: Despite the temps holding in the teens today here at PSU, the rain from Sunday washed away the little snow we had. No major snow has hit Plymouth State yet, and I expect it will remain dry through the weekend even though the cold will remain.

Tuesday, December 14, 2010

Cold back

Another cold blast has invaded the area, and will stay to the end of the week. We will be mainly storm free, but I can't rule out a passing flurry over the next few days. After a quiet start to the weekend, a powerful ocean storm will make a close pass to the area on Sunday. This could be the first significant snow of the season- but it still to early to determine the exact track of the low.

Rain totals: Sunday

Gloucester, MA: 4.1
Milford: 4
Needham: 3.1
JP: 2.4
Boston: 1

Boston, MA forecast:

Tonight: A mix of clouds and stars with a passing flurry or snow shower. Lows near 16 in Boston, 14 in JP and 10 in the suburbs.

Wednesday: Mostly cloudy and blustery along with a passing snow shower. High 23. NW wind of 15-25 MPH. Wind chills as low as 0 before 9 AM.

Wednesday night: Mostly cloudy with a flurry possible. Lows around 12.

Thursday: Mostly cloudy and a bit warmer. Highs around 30.

Friday: Sunshine returns with highs in the low 30's.

Saturday: Increasing clouds with highs in the mid 30's.

Sunday: Watching a powerful storm as it makes a close pass to southern New England. Highs in the low 30's. Stay tuned!

US weather: The arctic invasion continues with highs in the 30's all the way to Florida. Temps barley made it to 10 in the twin cities and the Great Lakes area today. The cold air mass will move into the Boston area on Wednesday, but it will modify a little.

Sunday, December 12, 2010

Heavy rain will continue through the night, creating some urban flood problems for the Monday morning commute. The wind will gust to 50 MPH until midnight, which will down some branches. World weather: Nearly 20 inches of snow fell in Minneapolis causing the roof of the Metrodome to fall, and causing the MIN-New York Giants game to be moved to Detroit on Monday. Near blizzard conditions in the Chicago area caused many flights to be cancelled, but did not effect the Pats rout of the Bears.

Wild Winter Storm

A intense storm will pass west of New England Sunday night providing the Boston area with a windswept rainstorm. It may begin as a brief period of wet snow or sleet-but won't amount to anything near Boston, but a light amount of ice is possible NW of Worcester. The heaviest rain will fall Sunday afternoon and night, when thunderstorms are possible with wind gusts to 60 MPH. Total rainfall of around 2 inches can be expected, it may create some street flooding by the Monday morning commute. Then, cold air rushes back into the area after the storm.

Alerts:

A Wind Advisory is in effect for the coast, including Boston.

A Flood Watch is in effect for northern New England, including here at PSU.

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect NW of Worcester. Some ice buildup is possible there.

Boston, MA forecast:

Tonight: Increasing clouds with rain showers mixed with wet snow arriving around dawn. Lows near 29, but rising to 34 by dawn.

Sunday: Rain showers mixed with wet snow until 8 AM, then rain showers until 1 PM. Then downpours with strong winds. High 50. SE wind of 20-30 MPH with gusts to 50 MPH on the Cape and 40 MPH in Boston. Rainfall around 1 inch.

Sunday night: Downpours with scattered thunderstorms in the evening, then heavy rain after midnight. Damaging winds possible with near steady temps in the upper 40's. SE winds of 25-35 MPH with peak gusts to 60 MPH on the Cape and 50 MPH in Boston in thunderstorms. Additional rainfall around 1 inch.

Tuesday: Partly sunny and cold. Highs around 30.

Friday, December 10, 2010

Constant Track

The track is seemingly set in stone, with all models sending low pressure over the great lakes giving us a rainstorm. 1.5-2 inches of rain can be expected, mainly Sunday afternoon and night. It will start as a brief period of freezing rain in Northern New England, with some light ice buildup possible there. Then, cold air rushes back in behind the system.

Lows this morning: Friday

Plymouth, NH: 2
Norwood, MA: 2

JP:12
Boston: 15

Boston, MA forecast:

World Weather : Major flooding continues in Australia as rivers continue to rise into communities in the Sydney area.

Thursday, December 9, 2010

Storm Sunday

A weak weather system will come through the area Friday evening, with scattered snow showers. However, it won't amount to much-maybe a coating. After a warm up on Saturday, a powerful storm will likely travel west of us on Sunday giving us a wind driven rain storm. If the track shifts further east, we would get a more frozen solution- but that seems unlikely at this point. Then, arctic air will come in behind the storm.

Boston, MA forecast:

Tonight: The coldest of the season so far. Clear with lows near 15 in Boston, 12 in JP and 5 in the suburbs. Below 0 up here at Plymouth, NH.

Friday: A mix of sun and clouds in the morning, then cloudy in the afternoon. High 29. West wind of 10-15 MPH.

Tuesday, December 7, 2010

Flakes Friday

Wednesday and Thursday will be cold and dry. Then, a warm front will come through the area on Friday night-bringing the first snowfall of the season. However, it will be very light and will only amount to an inch or less. A bigger storm is likely on Sunday, and the precip type is in question.

Storm Recap

This storm was very unique in many ways- including it was as strong as a Cat 1 Hurricane as it slammed New England. Also, It is the first storm any Met can remember that went north of Cape Cod, and then turned SW and crossing right over Eastern MA. And, It caused winds to turn from a NE direction to calm, and then SW- just like a passing of a Hurricane. It has been compared to the Perfect Storm in 1991, and even though that storm was much stronger-it did not make landfall like this one did. It also caused the first snow in much of Central and Western New England. It is now slowly moving south and weakening, although wind gusts still topped 40 MPH on the Cape and Islands today. The heavy rain has moved on, and skies should clear in time for a nice weekend.

Nor'easter on the way

The storm stalled offshore will combine with another low off the Carolina coast and give us a windswept soaker Sunday night thru Tuesday morning. Winds will gust to gale force thru the day on Monday and perhaps higher on the Cape, which will cause some coastal flooding as well. Tomas has re-gathered Hurricane status, and the center is expected to remain offshore. However, some off Tomas's moisture may get rapped into the storm causing more rain than expected as it heads towards SE Canada as a remnant low. It should dry out by the end of the week, but the warmest air will remain to our west.

Tuesday: Rain and wind end in the morning, then remaining cloudy and breezy. Highs in the upper 40's.

Wednesday: Skies finally clear! Highs around 50.

Complex New England Nor'easter

A strong low pressure center will cross over the area Friday morning, bringing the Boston area heavy rain and wind. As the storm moves into northern New England the wind will shift to the NW and pickup dramatically- some gusts could pass 50 MPH Friday night. That will make temps drop enough so the rain will change to heavy, wet SNOW above 1500 FT in northern and western New England. 6+ inches of snow may accumulate there, causing major damage. But, I don't expect any flakes in the Boston area. However, up here in Plymouth a few wet snow flakes may mix in towards the very end of the storm.

Alerts: For New England

After a quiet Wednesday, a powerful Nor'easter will approach late on Thursday and lasting through Friday night. It is expected to hammer the area with heavy rain and wind gusts possibly over 50 MPH. Coastal flooding is also expected. Of course a change in the track would alter this forecast, but that seems unlikely. Stay tuned for more details as we get closer.

Frost Advisory

A Frost Advisory has been issued for all of MA, away from the south coastline and the city center of Boston for tonight.  Temps are expected to dip into the low to mid 30's which will create areas of Frost. A Freeze Warning is in effect for the Plymouth, NH area and west of Worcester temps will dip into the upper 20's there.

The Frost Advisory area includes locations like: Brookline, Cambridge, Concord, Westwood, Brockton and Lowell.

In JP area I expect temps to drop to around 36 or 37 by dawn Sunday. That may create some patchy frost in the usual coolest locations, but a widespread frost is not expected.

Bring your plants inside tonight!

Another update later-enjoy your holiday weekend.
