SPECIAL: 2011 ATLANTIC HURRICANE SEASON PREVIEW!

The 2011 Atlantic Hurricane Season starts on June 1st and ends on Nov. 30th and this is a preview for the upcoming season.

Review of Facts: A Tropical Storm (TS) needs sustained winds of 39 MPH to be given a name.

Hurricane Categories: A Hurricane needs sustained winds of at least 74 MPH to obtain hurricane status. Waters usually need to be at least 80 degrees for a Hurricane to form or gain strength, most common in the tropics.

Category 1: Winds of 74-94 MPH.

Category 2: Winds of 95-110 MPH.

Category 3: Winds of 111-130 MPH. A major Hurricane is Cat 3 or higher.

Category 4: Winds of 131-154 MPH.

Category 5: Winds of 155+ MPH.

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) gives a projected path based on global weather models, and I will base my forecast on their track. The track goes out 5 days and gives projected wind speeds and position.

New England Review: The last Hurricane to make landfall in New England was Hurricane Bob in 1991. The last Tropical Storm to make landfall was Hannah in 2008. Last year, Hurricane Earl passed about 60 miles east of Cape Cod in early September. It brought heavy rain to the Cape and Islands and some strong gusts. However, it did not cause any significant damage as it weakened and turned east as it came up the coast. And, it did not make landfall until it hit Nova Scotia, Canada the next day.

Atlantic Hurricane Averages: From 1950-2010

Named Storms: 12
Hurricanes: 7
Major Hurricanes: 3
US Landfalls per year: 6 (TS or Hurricanes)

MY Forecast for 2011:

Named Storms: 16
Hurricanes: 9
Major Hurricanes: 3
US Landfalls: 5 - no Hurricane landfalls last year despite above avg. activity
New England Threats: 2

2011 Forecast of Tracks:

I expect that most storms will come across the Atlantic and hit the Gulf Coast States or the SE coast. I believe that the major centers of Galveston, TX and Miami have an above average chance of a major Hurricane this season. Also, the Carolina and the Georgia coast have a high chance for a storm this year. I believe that most storms will threaten the US coast from late July thru September. However, any coastal resident should be prepared for a Hurricane at any point during the season.

New England Preview:

I believe that New England has a chance for a Hurricane or 2 this year. Most storms will threaten from August thru mid September, as the water is the warmest at this point. Any storm that threatens the SE coast of the US could easily turn NE and come for Southern New England. Although, I expect most storms this year will actually hit the SE states, rather than turn NE and come up the coast. But, there is always the possibility of a storm coming up the east coast this season. Usually, most storms lose strength as it comes up the coast because the water is cooler than 80 degrees. However, any storm that comes up the coast rapidly may be able to hold on to some of its punch. Any coastal residents of New England, including here in Boston should be on guard if a Hurricane approaches. And, the Outer Cape and especially Nantucket get tropical cyclones most often.

Current Outlook: 2011

Nothing has formed yet, however most global models are indicating that a Tropical Disturbance may form in the Caribbean this week. Also, a Typhoon formed in the West Pacific this week reaching MAX winds of 170 MPH! I will continue to update on any Tropical Storm Developments during the season all over the world.

Note: Stay tuned for my Memorial Day forecast Tomorrow!

The stalled storm on the East Coast will continue to dominate our weather over the next few days. Periods of rain, mist and drizzle along with low clouds will continue thru the end of the week. Gloomy Week

A stalled storm on the east coast will continue to lead to periods of rain, mist and drizzle all week long. While it won't be raining every minute, it won't really dry out as moisture continues to come up the coast. Temps will hold in the 50's for most of the week as the NE wind comes in off the chilly waters. Flooding shouldn't be a major issue around Boston as the heaviest rain stays in Northern and Western New England.

Boston, MA forecast:

Tonight: Low clouds and fog with scattered showers. Low 50.

Monday: Low clouds and fog with scattered showers, mist and drizzle. High 55. NE wind of 10-20 MPH with gusts to 30 MPH.

Tropics: Today is the start of the East Pacific Hurricane Season. Atlantic Hurricane season starts on June 1st! Stay tuned for my Atlantic Hurricane season special during Memorial Day Weekend!

Note: This is finals week for me, so I will blog when I have time. I will be returning home on Friday for the Summer!

Split Weekend

Saturday will not be that bad as we squeeze out another dry day. However, a slow moving storm will come in on Sunday and rain will arrive in the afternoon. The storm will stall on east coast early next week leading to periods of rain for a few days. Depending on where the axis of heavy rain sets up, flooding could be become an issue by the end of next week.

Boston, MA forecast:

Short Break

As the nor'easter slowly pulls away skies will lead to more sun over the next few days. Both Thursday and Friday will feature onshore winds leading to cooler readings in Boston than further inland. On Saturday afternoon a front will come south from northern New England and stall near the area-possibly leading to days of rain.

Boston, MA forecast:

Sunday: A soaking rain is possible as a storm comes along the front stalled over parts of New England. Depending on where exactly the front sets up days and days of rain is possible. Highs in the upper 50's.

Earthquake: Back to back quakes of 4.4 and 5.2 centered around 200 miles away from Madrid struck Spain earlier today. The earthquakes lead to dozens of injuries and minor damage to the area. Also, a seismologist predicted in 1915 that a major quake would strike Rome, Italy today- leading to 1 in 5 Italians to stay out of work and school. The same seismologist correctly predicted two earlier major earthquakes that struck Italy. Tremors were felt in Italy from the quake that struck about 800 miles to the west today.

A weak storm system will come into the area on Saturday afternoon, bringing showers and some brief downpours. However, the entire day is not washed out and temps will come close to 70 again. Friday will be a great day with sunny skies and with a SW wind temps will rise to near 70. Unfortunately, a weak low pressure system will effect the area on Saturday with showers in the afternoon. Mother's day looks OK with a shower possible, but it will be cooler. Early next week a coastal storm is possible-maybe leading to more cool and cloudy days.

Boston, MA forecast:

Tonight: Showers this evening will fade to clear skies overnight. Cold with lows near 43 in Boston, 40 in JP and 35 in the suburbs. Patchy frost is possible away from the city.

A cold front is coming thru the area this evening, leading to showers. The front will get hung up in our area on Thursday leading to a cool day with scattered showers. Tuesday, May 3, 2011

A cold front will slowly approach the area on Wednesday giving us some showers-especially during the afternoon. But, considering what the South and Midwest have had to deal with, it won't be that bad. The front will hang in the area on Thursday leading to another cool and cloudy day. The weekend is still in question at this early stage, but I'm optimistic it will be dry.

Boston, MA forecast:
