Ida is now centered near Cuba, and is headed north into the Gulf of Mexico. It has rapidly gained strength and now has winds of 70 MPH, and is expected to become a hurricane tonight. The latest projected path from the Hurricane Center has it moving north towards the Louisiana (LA) coast, then turning east at the last minute and heading towards the West Coast of Florida. Too bad for my dad, who is planning to fly to New Orleans on Sunday for a meeting, and fly home on Tuesday. Ida may be very close to the LA coast on Tuesday or Wednesday, before veering east. One model then brings the storm up the East Coast, putting the storm center over New England on Thursday. It would not be a hurricane at this point, just a nor'easter type system. However, at this early stage it seems that the most likely outcome is for Ida to get pushed by a cold front, and then head out to sea.
Meanwhile, a storm is forming near the Texas coast, and is forecasted to move towards the LA coast as well Sunday night, bringing heavy rain and winds gusting over 50 MPH, even if Ida turns towards Florida. It is possible that the storms combine and become one huge storm, but that seems unlikely.
Boston, MA forecast:
Tonight: Partly cloudy, lows near 40.
Sunday: A pleasant day with sunny skies and temps near 65.
Sunday night: Clear, lows in the 30's.
Monday: Sunny, high 63.
