Close Call

Hurricane Earl remains a major Hurricane with winds of 135 MPH early this evening. The exact track is still in question, but seems to becoming closer to a solution. The track from the NHC takes it just east of the Outer Banks of North Carolina, and then a turn to the NE and up to Cape Cod. The big questions are how far west it goes before the turn, and how sharp the turn is. Those questions will be answered over the next couple of days. The current track sends it about 65 miles East of the Cape and islands still as a Cat 3 Hurricane on Friday night. Again, that would bring Hurricane force gusts to the outer Cape and the Islands, and Tropical storm wind gusts to the Boston area. But, a shift to the west would bring more destructive winds onshore- stay tuned for more updates.

Tropical Storm Watch: Means winds of 40 -74 MPH are possible within 48 hours along with heavy rain

Tropical Storm Warning: Winds of 40-74 MPH are expected within 24 hours along with storm surge, and possible flooding. Time to prepare.

Hurricane Watch: Means winds of 75+MPH are possible with 48 hours. A Hurricane watch may be posted for the Cape and Islands tomorrow. Time to begin prep.

Hurricane Warning: Means hurricane conditions within 24 hours. Which includs storm surge, winds of 75+MPH and flooding. Time to consider an evacuation.

Boston, MA forecast:

Tonight: Time for the AC. Clear, but stuffy with lows in the mid 70's.

Wednesday: Hazy, hot and humid. High 95. NW wind of 10-20 MPH.

Wednesday night: Clear, lows in the 70's.

Thursday: Sunny unti 3 PM, then high clouds arrive. Hot and humid with highs in the mid 90's.

Friday: Hurricane Earl will likely effect the region starting in the afternoon. HURRICANE CONDITIONS POSSIBLE ON THE CAPE AND ISLANDS. TROPICAL STORM CONDITIONS POSSIBLE IN BOSTON. Heavy rain and wind seem likely from Boston and points south and east.

Friday night: The height of the storm hits. Depending on the exact track of Earl, Tropical Storm or Hurricane Conditons continue through the night. Stay tuned!

Major Hurricane Earl

Hurrcane Earl is now a Category 4 Hurricane with winds of 135 MPH just north of Puerto Rico. It is expected to gain more strength as it heads well east of Florida, and may become a Category 5 Hurricane-the strongest possible (over 155 MPH winds). Then, pass by the outer banks of North Carolina on Thursday. Then, racing very close to New England as a major Hurricane Friday evening. The exact track will play a big role in who gets the strongest winds. The current track right now sends it about 75 miles EAST of Cape Cod. That would give HURRICANE CONDITIONS to the outer Cape and Islands on Friday afternoon, and Tropical Storm conditons closer to Boston. But just a slight shift to the west (about 50 miles) may bring the destructive winds onshore, and wind gusts to Hurricane force closer to the Boston area. But, a shift to the east of 50 miles would spare the region of the Hurricane force winds. However, the models have been shifting west and closer to New England over the last couple of days. The Hurricane will be moving at around 25 MPH, which is very quick. Stay tuned for more track updates!

Now, there is no need to panic yet-just have and action plan ready-especially if you are on the Cape. Stay tuned for further updates through the rest of the week. I will post immidately if a watch or warning is issued for MA. Until Friday, the heat builds along with more humidity.


Boston, MA forecast:

Tonight: Clear, and still OK for sleeping. Lows near 72 in Boston and 65 in the suburbs.

Tuesday: A very hot day as the humidity starts to build. High 97. NW wind of 10-15 MPH.

Tuesday night: Time for the AC's-clear with lows in the 70's.

Wednesday: Hazy, hot and humid. Highs in the upper 90's.

Thursday: Sunny in the morning, then increasing clouds as the Hurricane approaches. Humid with highs in the mid 90's.

Friday and Friday Night: HURRICANE CONDTIONS POSSIBLE ON THE CAPE AND ISLANDS. TROPICAL STORM CONDITIONS POSSIBLE IN BOSTON. Highs around 80. Heavy rain and wind possible as Earl makes it closest pass in the evening as a Major Hurricane. Stay tuned!

Hi from Plymouth State

I arrived here in Plymouth, NH early this afternoon and settled in nicely to my dorm. My roomate's name is Eric Byrnes and he is a very nice guy from a small town in eastern Maine. My first class is on Wednesday, Semptember 1st and I am planning on studying the weather. I am planning to continue to blog about the Boston weather while I am here.


Hurricane Earl: As of the 11 PM advisory Hurricane Earl has winds of 100 MPH and is 100 miles east of Puerto Rico. Hurricane Warnings have been issued for the Leeward Islands and a Tropical Storm warning is in effect for Puerto Rico. The latest track makes it a Category 4 Hurricane with winds of 135 MPH on Thursday afternoon off the Carolina coast. Then the offical track sends it out to sea, but within striking distance of grazing the Cape and Islands. However, ALL of the state of MA is in the "cone of question", that is the cone of where the eye is expected to travel. That means we could still get a DIRECT hit on Friday afternoon as a Category 2 or 3 Hurricane. Stay tuned for more details throughout the week.


Boston, MA forecast:

Tonight: Clear, with lows near 65 in Boston and 56 in the suburbs.

Monday: Sunny with a seabreeze. Highs near 84 at the beaches, 90 in JP and 94 inland. North wind of 10-15 MPH.

Monday night: Clear, lows in the low 60's.

Tuesday: Sunny and hot Highs in the mid 90's.

Wednesday: Sunny with increasing humidity. Highs in the mid 90's.

Thursday: All eyes turn to Hurricane Earl approaching New England from the south. It will be a close call-so stay tuned. Sunny with highs around 90.

Tropical Storm Earl

Tropical Storm Earl has winds of 65 MPH and is tracking toward the Leeward Islands. It is expected to become a major Hurricane as it passes just to north of Puerto Rico by Tuesday. After grazing them, It is expected to track very close to North Carolina on Thursday. Then, make a very close pass to New England next weekend as a major Hurricane. Until then, sunny skies and hot temps will rule.

Off to College: I am headed up to Plymouth State tomorrow for my first day of college- I am very excited, and a bit anxious as well. I will continue to forecast the Boston area weather from up there as much as I can. I may decide to post the Plymouth, NH forecast as well- if my fellow classmates are planning on reading my posts. I am planning to study the weather there for the next 4 years.


Boston, Ma forecast:

Tonight: Clear, lows around 60.

Sunday: A hot one for the move in to College. Mainly sunny with low humidity. High 93. SW wind of 10-20 MPH.

Sunday night: Clear, lows in the mid 60's.

Monday: Sunny with low humidity. High 91.

Tuesday: Sunny, with highs in the low 90's.

Wednesday: The dry strech continues as all eyes turn to Earl approaching from the south. Hiighs around 90.

Danielle out to sea

Hurricane Danielle now has winds of 110 MPH as it heads NW at 15 MPH. It is expected to brush Bermuda from the east, then head just east of Newfunland. It may create some rip currents at some each facing beaches this weekend, otherwise no effect is expected here in New England. Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Earl has formed off the coast of Africa and is expected to become a major Hurricane as well. At this early point the storm is expected to pass close to the east coast of the US late next week. Stay tuned for more details. Over the next several days sunny skies and a gradual warming trend can be expected.

Tonight: Clear, lows near 60 in Bosotn and 52 in the suburbs.

Friday: Sunny, but a tad cooler than today. High 76. NW wind of 10-15 MPH.

Friday night: Clear, lows in the upper 50's.

Saturday: Sunny with highs in the mid 80's. A great beach day.

Sunday: A nice day for my first day of College- with sunny skies and highs in the low 90's. Cooler up in Plymouth, NH.

Monday: The dry weather continues with highs around 90.

Nor'easter gone- back to summer

It poured this morning, but ended before the sox game at 130. Many streets were flooded in and around the Boston area, as an additonal 2-4 inches of rain fell. Now, the storm will move on and sunshine and warm temps will return before I head to Plymouth State on Sunday to start my studies in Meterology.

Thursday: Fog until 8 AM, then turning mostly sunny with a slight risk of a midday shower. Warmer with a high of 85. SW wind of 10-20 MPH.

Thursday night: Clear, lows in the 50's.

Friday: Sunny, but a bit cooler. Highs in the mid 70's.

Saturday: Sunny and turning hot. Highs in the upper 80's.

Sunday: A hot day to head to college. Sunny with highs in the low 90's.

Tracking Danielle: Hurricane Danielle now has winds of 100 MPH and is moving WNW at 17 MPH. It is about 300 miles east of the Leeward islands. It is expected to head towards Bermuda, then turn north. If it turns north quickly it will head to Atlantic Canada, but if it slows down just a bit it may head more towards the MA coastline early next week. Stay tuned for more details over the next couple of days.
