Sandy Stats

Storm Update
Winds have picked up today along with pockets of light rain. Winds will begin to ramp up first thing in the morning, then the height of the storm will be Monday afternoon. Winds may gust close to hurricane force in some areas leading to widespread power outages. High waves will also cause major coastal flooding in some south coastal locations. I highly suggest that you stay inside during the height of the storm because of the danger of downed power lines.

Storm Timeline
Hurricane Sandy will make landfall in Central New Jersey on Monday as a Cat 1 Hurricane. That will lead to a major impact here in the Boston area. The peak of the storm will during the day on Monday with heavy rain and strong winds. However, the heaviest rain will fall to our south- in the NYC to Washington corridor. The seas will also build offshore leading to severe coastal flooding over many tide cycles along the coast.

Sandy Forecast
Sandy now has winds of 75 MPH, making it a minimal Category 1 Hurricane. The latest track still sends it into NJ as a strong Tropical Storm or minimal Hurricane. That would still lead to a major impact here in the Boston area. Conditions would start to worsen by late Sunday and not improving until Tuesday night. Now is the time to prepare for the storm! Bring any items that may blow away, and clear leaves from any storm drains to help the flooding.

Track of Sandy
Hurricane Sandy now has winds of 100 MPH, making it a Cat 2. The latest track sends it North up the eastern seaboard, but then turning NW into NJ on Monday as a Strong TS or minimal Hurricane. So, it seems more probable that we will get some effects from Sandy. This track would not be the worst case scenario, but it would still gives strong winds and heavy rain. Impact Likely
Hurricane Sandy now has winds of 85 MPH, but it is intensifying south of Cuba. The latest track has a path through the Bahamas as a Hurricane. It will then come up the east coast this weekend making a very close pass to New England if not a direct hit on Monday seems very possible. At the point it comes up here it could be a Hurricane or an extra tropical major nor'easter. Either way the effects could be damaging. Stay tuned for further updates.

Tracking Sandy
Tropical Storm Sandy still has winds of 50 MPH. However, it is expected to become a Hurricane overnight as it heads towards Jamaica. It will then cross Cuba and head towards the Bahamas towards Friday. After that it becomes tricky. One reliable model sends it out to sea, the other sends it into New England by Monday as a historic nor'easter. At this point either solution is possible.

Tropical Storm Sandy
Tropical Storm Sandy has formed south of Jamaica with winds of 45 MPH. The latest track sends it across Jamaica and Cuba over the next few days . And then late in the week it will pass over the Bahamas After that it is still up in the air, but there is a chance it could come up the east coast and make a close pass to New England early next week. New England Earthquake!
An earthquake has it New England tonight with a magnitude of 4.0 at around 710 PM. It was originally estimated at 4.6, but it was later downgraded. The epicenter was just outside of Portland, ME in a town called Hollis Center. We felt it here in Plymouth, NH at Plymouth State University. The apartment shook for a couple of seconds as the earthquake hit. The quake was felt all over New England, but thankfully no major damage has been reported.

Showers tonight
A cool front will come thru tonight leading to widespread showers. Temps will be cooler on Tuesday behind the front with a west wind. But, temps will rebound on Wednesday and Thursday along with sunny skies. More rain is likely by late Friday.

Widespread Frost
The coldest air of the season will come into the area tonight. So, bring in any plants that you may have outside. Saturday will be a great fall day with sunny skies and temps in the 50's. Sunday will be a warmer day, but there will be a chance for a morning shower.

Freeze Watch
A Freeze Watch has been issued for Friday night for the entire Boston area. So, bring in any plants that could be killed. As a cold front will come thru the area with just a shower possible, but it will drop the temps in the afternoon. After a cold start Saturday will turn out to be a great fall day. It will turn out warmer on Sunday.

Bright and Breezy
The sun will finally come out on Thursday along with a gusty wind. A cool front will come thru on Friday leading to a small chance of a shower but also cooler temps. This weekend there will be a widespread frost for the first time and then a warmup on Sunday.

One More

SPECIAL: Columbus Day Weekend Forecast
It will be not the best weekend to view foliage, but leaves are changing up in Northern New England. And, even in the Boston area some trees are changing as well. On Saturday showers will fall in the mountains, with just scattered showers in the Boston area. Sunday will washed out in Boston, but only showers further north.

Fine Friday

Another Day
