Severe threat mainly over

The cell that was headed right for us faded out in west Newton, as the strongest part missed JP to the north. The strongest part of the cell went through Medford, Malden and Winthrop. Meanwhile, another cell went through Hyde Park and Dedham. Downed trees and hail were reported all over the Boston area, as winds gusted to 70 MPH in central mass. Now, skies will clear after 8 PM and Wednesday will be a great day with temps hitting the 70's with no severe threat.

Alerts: A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in effect until 8 PM tonight

Tonight: Showers and isolated severe thunderstorms with hail and winds gusting to 60 MPH until 8 PM, then clearing. Lows near 57 Downtown, 54 in JP and 49 in the suburbs.

Wednesday: A great day with deep blue skies and a high of 77. A west wind of 10-20 MPH.

Wednesday night: Partly cloudy with lows in the 50's.

Thursday: Mostly cloudy with showers and thunderstorms likely. Severe storms are possible again. Highs in the mid 70's.

Friday: Sunny with highs in the low 70's.

Saturday: Showers likely in the morning, then it will dry out for the afternoon. Cooler with highs in the 60's.

  1. A cell refers to a single thunderstorm with one main updraft, severe or not. A severe thunderstorm means hail at least 1 inch wide, winds of at least 58 MPH and sometimes a tornado. There is also something called a super-cell thunderstorm, which is the most severe and usually means a tornado. These are most common in the middle of the country. If a severe thunderstorm warning is issued it means that a severe cell or super-cell is less than 45 minutes away, or it is occurring. When a warning is issued you should get inside and stay away from windows until the storm passes. A thunderstorm cell usually lasts 20-30 min. I expect severe storms around the area through the summer.
