Quiet Week

Finally, a nice strech of weather is ahead. Expect low to mid 70's and low humidity for most of the week. However, the mornings will be cool. My mom, brother and I are on the Vineyard, where yesterday the fog came in. The fog was all the way to the ground and we could not see more than 10 yards in front of us, and driving became tough. The fog may come in on the cape and islands again this afternoon.

JP forecast:

Today: partly cloudy, High 74. Cooler right along the beaches. Light sea breeze.

Tonight: Early evening fog possible, otherwise clear. Cool. Low 52. Cooler in Suburbs.

Tuesday: Sunny, High 74. Once again, a bit cooler along the coast. It may become cloudy in the afternoon on Cape and Islands.

Tuesday night: Clear, low 51. Cooler outside the city.

Wednesday: Sunny, high 76.

Wednesday night: Some clouds, low 52.

World weather: Hurricane Jimena is now a category 4 hurricane, with winds of 145 MPH. It is in the pacific ocean, headed towards Baja California. Hurricane watches have been posted, and it is expected to hit on Tue morning. The are currently no hurricanes in the Atlantic ocean.

Flooding

Danny has weakend to a regular low pressure center. It still packs winds of around 30 MPH or so. However, it is still bringing lots of heavy rain, and strong winds on the Cape. We are on the Vineyard, and many roads are flooded and impassible. The winds are just starting to rev up on the Vineyard, as some gusts to around 40 MPH are possible. The rain should begin to wind down from SW to NE by around 6 PM.

Alerts: Flash flood watch in Eastern Mass, close to 5 inches of rain may fall in some places. Wind advisory for cape and Islands. High surf Advisory for south and east facing beaches.

Danny Weakens

As of 8am TS Danny now has maximum winds of only 40 MPH. That makes Danny a minimal tropical storm. It is still forecasted to pass within about 40 miles east of Nantucket. It now appears that it will not stregnthen into a hurricane. When it passes by Nantucket on Saturday afternoon it will pack winds of around 50 MPH. At the same time a storm system will move in from the west, and it will create a huge rainstorm right on top of us. There will be less wind further away from the Cape. Even if Danny does not make landfall, we will still have rain from both systems.

The timeline:
On Friday night: Rain will overspread the Cape after midnight, gusts to 30 or so are possible. Rain from west will also aprroach the area.

Saturday: Heavy rain, up to 5 inches in eastern Mass and NH. Gusty winds around Boston and points north along coast of up to 40 MPH, winds of 30-40 MPh with gusts to 50MPH are possible on cape and islands. The wind will be out of the Northeast. The height of the storm will be from 10am-6pm. Seas will be rough. (more stregnthening of Danny is possible)

Saturday night: Heavy rain ends. Some showers possible before midnight. Still windy along coast with gusts to 40 MPH from NW.

Please feel free to ask any questions.

Following Danny

Tropical storm Danny currently has maximum winds of 60 MPH, a tropical storm. There has been a shift in the track since yesterday. Most of the models have it stregnthening into a hurricane, then passing about 50 miles SE of nantucket. That would bring up to 5 inches of rain to the Cape and islands. Gusty winds up to 55 mph or so on the cape would occur as it races past the Cape. In Boston, we would have heavy rain, up to about 2 inches, and gust winds up to about 30 MPH. However, we are still in the cone, so any shift to the west would bring hurricane force winds to the cape, and most of the Mass. coastline. Another update tonight.

Tropical storm Danny

If you have any questions feel free to email me at nolobaseball@gmail.com

Tropical Storm Danny has formed in the Atlantic. It currently has winds of 45 MPH. It is moving WNW at about 10MPH. It is expected to continue on this track and then turn north by late Friday. Then Danny may be become a minimal hurricane with winds around 75 MPH. The track of the storm then takes it northeast, towards us on Saturday. The current exact track has it hitting Nantucket with around 75 MPH winds. However, some models show a DIRECT HIT on the south shore on Saturday afternoon. The track over Nantucket may bring 50 MPH gusts in the Boston area. If the storm tracks further to the west(south shore track), it would bring damaging winds to our coastline. If it tracks further east(out to sea), then there would be less of a wind impact. However, either track we are expecting heavy rain (2 inches +) and strong surf in most of eastern Mass, including the Boston area. This one appears that it will pass closer than Bill did, so it is important to keep an eye on this potential Hurricane.

Local forecast:

Tonight: Cold front arrivng with a chance of showers. Low 62. Wind turning to the north.
Thursday: sunny, gusty north wind. High 76. No humidity!
Thursday night: Clear, low 54. Cooler in suburbs.
Friday: Sunny and a bit cool high 73.

Remains humid

We made it to the vineyard yesterday afternoon. Our family is here for at least the next week, as we enjoy the last weeks of summer. We found little evidence of Bill, except for some puddles here and there. It rained heavily saturday night, but the highest wind gust recored was only 31 MPH on nantucket. Bill then made landfall as a hurricane last night in Newfoundland, causing minor damage. However, waves are still high and there are still riptides. A high surf advisory remains in effect for here on the Vineyard and the rest of the Cape Cod area.

Jamaica Plain forecast:

Today: Partly sunny. Humid. High 82. Chance of showers and thunderstorms this afternoon. NE winds 5-10 MPH

Tonight: Clearing, low 65. Humid

Tuesday: Sunny, high 86. Still humid

Tuesday night: Clear, low 67. Remains uncomfortable for sleeping.

Wednesday: Sunny in the morning, then partly sunny with a slight chance of a storm in the afternoon. Hot and humid, high 91.

Vineyard forecast:

Today: Partly sunny with a slight chance of a thunderstorm. Humid High 82. Light seabreeze

Tonight: Clearing, low 63.

Tuesday: Sunny, humid. High 82, but it will feel warmer.

Tueday night: clear, becoming more comfortable. Low 62.

Wednesday: Mostly sunny, high 78. A nice seabreeze.

TROPICAL STORM UPDATE

TROPICAL STORM WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT FOR CAPE AND ISLANDS. The center of Bill is about 250 miles south of Nantucket. The storm currently has winds of 85 MPH, a catogory 1 storm. Currently, it is moving north- right for us- but it is expected to turn NE later tonight. On that projection it would clip with cape with gusts up to 50 MPH. Heavy thunderstorms and showers would dump 1-2+ of rain overnight on the cape. The rain is expected to start between 10 and 11 pm on nantucket and then move north-westward. Here in Boston, some gusts over 25 are possible, and showers are likely. However, if the turn to the NE is delayed stronger winds may come closer to the cape. The worst should be over by 8 or 9 am on the cape, and it will be over earlier in the boston area.

Note: please stay out of the water through Monday. Riptides will last after Hurricane Bill passes by.

TROPICAL STORM WARNING

TROPICAL STORM WARNING IN EFFECT FOR CAPE AND ISLANDS. DO NOT GO IN THE OCEAN TODAY OR TOMORROW. Hurricane Bill will pass between 125 and 150 miles east of the cape early Sunday morning. Showers and heavy thunderstorm with winds gusting over 50 MPH at times can be expected.  Here in Boston expect some showers from Bill, and winds gusting to around 25-30 MPH. However, a slight shift in the track would bring damaging winds to the Cape and gusts to 40 MPH in Boston. Waves will continue to increase to up to 15-20 FT by tonight. Currently waves are around 10 ft off the coast. Also, some outreaching bands from Bill are beginning to effect Nantucket this afternoon.  Make sure to bring in all loose objects if you are on the Cape or islands. I will have another update on the Hurricane tonight.

Other alerts: Flood advisory for Middlesex county in effect until 345 this afternoon.
High surf advisory in effect for any east and south facing beaches south of Boston due to Hurricane Bill.

Local forecast:

Today: Partly sunny with a good chance of showers and thunderstorms this afternoon. Humid, high 86. Southeast winds 10-15 mph, with gusts to near 20. Stronger winds on the cape.

Tonight: TROPICAL STORM CONDITIONS EXPECTED ON THE CAPE AND ISLANDS. Rain,
windy and very humid. Low 72. NE winds of 30-40 with gusts to 50 MPH+ on the cape. E winds of 10-20 with gusts to 30 mph  for Boston and points northward along the coast. Little wind outside of 128 from Hurricane Bill. West of 128: good chance of showers and thunderstorms as a cold front approaches from the west. Some thunderstorms from front may contain small hail

Sunday: Rain on the cape until about noon. Winds diminishing after 10 AM. Rain over in Boston by mid morning from Hurricane Bill. A good chance of a heavy thunderstorm from the approaching cold front in the afternoon.  Humid. High 81.

Note: I am headed to the Vineyard tomorrow, I will be able to update my blog a soon as I arrive. Feel free to email any questions you have about the storm at nolobaseball@gmail.com

TROPICAL STORM CONDITIONS EXPECTED ON THE CAPE! It now appears that Hurricane Bill will pass between 100 and 150 miles east of Nantucket early sunday morning. When it passes east of the cape, the storm is expected to pack winds of about 115 MPH, a cat 3 storm.  Because of the size and strength of the hurricane, tropical storm force winds(40+) will likely brush SE mass, including cape cod and the islands. Heavy rain and 20 foot seas will accompany the strong winds of 35- 45 mph, with gusts up to 65 mph! Here in Boston we will have some heavy rain, and gusts up to about 40 mph. However, a slight shift westward in the track may bring hurricane force gusts(75 MPH+) to Nantucket, and stronger winds to the boston area and the north shore. Also, be sure to stay out of the water on sunday as dangerous rip currents will affect the coast.  We need to keep a close eye on this major hurricane. Feel free to email me any questions about the approaching storm at Nolobaseball@gmail.com

Local forecast:

Tonight: Mostly cloudy, low 72. Humid with a slight risk of a thundershower.

Friday: Hazy sun, humid. High 88. A chance of showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon. Some storms may have gusty winds, and some hail.

Friday night: Mostly cloudy and still humid, low 71. Slight risk of a thundershower.

Bill update

Hurricane Bill is now a Cat 4 storm, with winds of 135 MPH!  This a very intense hurricane. It is still moving WNW at 18 mph. The current track takes it about 150 miles away from the cape on sunday. The storm is forecasted to turn north, then northeast.  However, some models are indicating it may come closer than thought last night. If it stays on the current track, it may bring windy and cloudy conditions to the outer cape and nantucket. It would also bring dangerous rip currents and high surf to the area. If it comes any closer, then we would have to watch the bands of rain very closely. The key player is the cold front forecasted to swing in from the northwest on saturday night. IF it comes on time, it would push Hurricane Bill just far enough away not to bother us with strong winds and rain. However, if the front slows down it would allow the Hurricane to come closer to the coast. When it makes it closest pass to the cape, the storm is expected to pack winds between 100-120 MPH, a category 2 or 3 storm.  It is very important to keep on eye on this potentially serious situation.

Local news: first heat wave recorded in boston this year!

Local forecast:

Tonight: Slight chance of an early thundershower as a cool front passes. Low 69. Becoming less humid.

Thursday: Mostly cloudy, high 84. Less humid.

Thursday night: Humidity comes back, low 70. Good chance of some showers and storms.

Friday: Hot and very humid again. High 88. Showers and thunderstorms likely at any point during the afternoon. Some hazy sun.

Bill update

Another hot one today, temps will be very close to the record temp of 95. This heat will continue for another day. Meanwhile, hurricane Bill continues to move to the west. The storm is now a catogory 2 storm with winds of 105 MPH, as of 11 am this morning. It is expected to intensify to around 125 MPH. The current track of the storm takes it Northwest, then to the north, then past Bermuda around saturday. Then the big question is when does it turn more to the northeast? The current track takes it just to the west of bermuda, then it curves away from the cape at the last minute, passing about 200 miles to the east. That would cause some high surf and rip currents, but not much else. When the hurricane passes by the cape on sunday morning, it is expected to be a catogory 2 storm( winds 95-110 MPH) However, we are in the cone of the projected path, so we need to keep it an eye on the storm. The cone is a forecast of a possible path of the eye of the hurricane.

Watching Bill

Another hot one out there today. Temps hit 94 at logan, highest temp of the summer. An even hotter day is in store for tomorrow. Hurricane Bill has formed in the Atlantic ocean, about 975 miles east of the Lesser antilles islands. It currently has 90 MPH winds, and is forecasted to become a major hurricane with winds exceeding 130 MPH, a Catogory 4 storm. It is forecast to move northwest towards Bermuda by friday, then turn north, then northeast. The question is, where does it turn north? It is still too early to tell. If the hurricane turns north sooner, it will miss the cape, and just cause high surf over the weekend. If the storm turns north later, we could be facing a very serious situation. The storm would cause very high winds, near 100 mph!(based on current strength forecasts) As well as torrential rain, and major costal flooding. Those conditions would be mainly along the coast, and especially on the cape and islands. The storm may also go in between these 2 extremes, and just grazing us with some rain and wind. It is very imporatant for us to keep on eye on this potentially major Hurricane.

Tonight: Clear. Low 72. Humid. Crank up the AC!

Tuesday: Sunny. Hot and humid. High 96. It may feel like over 100 at times.

Tuesday night: Clear, then some clouds late. Low 73. Still humid.

Wednseday: Relief from the heat will arrive with a cold front in the afternoon, with showers and heavy thunderstorms. Before the front arrives, hot and humid. High 90.

Weekend weather

Happy weekend! A huge high pressure system is on top of us for the next several days. That will cause sunny and summery conditions. The front that caused the cool and cloudy weather is stalled over the mid-atlantic states. Showers and storms are forming along the front and moving northeastward. The showers will most likely remain south of Cape Cod, but it is something to watch over the next couple of days.

Local news/Alerts:First heat wave expected here in Jamaica Plain!

Today: Sunny and very warm. High 90. It will also be humid. Dew points will be close to 65.  Winds from the Southwest 5-10 mph. However, a wind off the water may develop in the afternoon. The sea breeze may keep temps from reaching 90 at logan.

Tonight: Clear. Low 66. AC needed. Very humid.

Sunday: Sunny, humid. High 90. Again a sea breeze may develop. Dew point close to 70.

Sunday night: Some clouds late, otherwise clear. Low 70. Very humid.

Dew point scale:
Below 50- Dry
50-55- very nice
55-60- Still nice
60-65 A bit humid
65- 70- Hard to handle for some.
70+- Oppressive humidity, tropical

World weather: First tropical storm of the season! The first tropical storm has formed in the Atlantic ocean and is about 920 miles east of the Leeward Islands. It may gain hurricane strength in the coming days. There is a tropical depression (30-39 MPH) following in her footsteps, and is about 740 miles west from the Cape Verde Islands. This is also expected to gain strength.

Advisories as of 11 AM this morning:
TS Ana:
40 MPH winds
Moving west at 16 MPH

Tropical depression 3:
35 Mph
Moving west at 17 West

Welcome to my first blog- boston weather

I have enjoyed watching and reading about the weather, so I have decided to create a blog. I love the always changing weather here in New England. Most days I will give a local detailed forecast and  any major events happening around the world.

For today (sunday 8/9/09): Starting out with a little sun, followed by overcast skies. A chance of showers or thunderstorms after 3 pm. High near 75. There will be a cool breeze.

Tonight: Showers and heavy thunderstorms likely. Becoming more humid overnight. Low around 66.

Monday: Triple H's- Hazy, Hot and Humid. High around 93. Slight chance of a brief t-storm in the early morning hours. Crank up that AC!

Monday night: Humid and becoming cloudy with a good chance of showers after midnight. Keep the AC running with a low around 74.

World weather:  1 Million people evacuated in China!  As Typhoon Morakot rumbled towards China, there was torrential rain, and very high storm surge. It is now a tropical storm, with winds near 45 MPH. It is currently making landfall over Southeast China. Before it got there it caused 100 inches of rain in Taiwan. That caused the worst flooding in 50 years. It caused at least 35 people to be injured or killed in Taiwan or the Philippines.
