Nor'easter Update

As the Precip set in this afternoon temps nearly 10 degrees in a hour or 2. It was an a quite a sight to see. Snow will continue to mix with rain this evening, and will have a tough time sticking to roads this evening. However, later tonight the snow will come down harder and will stick to roads and sidewalks. Pinning down snow amounts is very tough. The track has shifted to SE today, but not quite enough to have all snow all the way to the shore. But, just a slight shift in conditions or track could bring heavy, wet snowright to Boston or the coast. At this point I still think a good thumping of snow will fall JUST west and NW of the city- with another jackpot NW of Worcester. Something like 6 inches could fall as close as places such as Weston or Lexington. JP is also a very tough call- but a few inches seem likely.

Alerts: A Winter Storm Warning is in effect NW of Rte. 495.

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect NW of Boston.

Nor'easter Timeline: Thursday night thru Friday

9 PM-Midnight: Snow will mix with rain. Snow may stick to the grassy surfaces. Temp 35. NE wind of 15-25 MPH.

Midnight- 7AM: The height of the storm hits. Any rain should switch heavy, wet snow. Temp 32. Roads will become snow covered. NE winds of 20-30 MPH with gusts to 45 MPH.

7AM-9AM: Snow tapers to rain or snow showers. Temp 35. North wind of 20-30 MPH.

9AM-5 PM: Scattered rain and snow showers continue. Temp will rise to 37, before falling to 32 in the afternoon. NW wind of 25-35 MPH with gusts to 50 MPH.

Friday night: Scattered snow showers continue with temps falling into the mid 20's by morning.

Snow Amounts: Inches

3-5: The Boston area. About 3 inches in JP. 6 inch amounts are possible not far NW of the city. Stay tuned for another snow totals update if the forecast changes.

Note: Stay tuned for a forecast for the weekend Tomorrow.

Comlex Forecast

A powerful nor'easter will effect New England Thursday night into Friday with heavy precip and strong winds. The latest track has shifted to the west-over the Cape. With that track it will be very hard to have all snow in Boston, but keep in mind it could still shift SE leading to more snow. However, that is not likely at this point and I am basing my forecast on the current track. Rain and snow showers will start during the day on Thursday with little accumulation. The height of the storm now appears to be during the night on Thursday thru mid Friday morning. Major power outages are expected in NH, VT and ME with a heavy wet snow. Coastal flooding will be minor during the Friday morning high tide.

Alerts: A Winter Storm Watch is in effect NW of Boston, including here at PSU.

Boston, MA forecast:

Tonight: Increasing clouds with a low 32.

Thursday morning: Cloudy with scattered rain and snow showers with temps in the 30's. An increasing NE wind.

Nor'easter Timeline: Thursday into Friday

3 PM: Rain showers become more widespread around Boston-temp 42.

9 PM: Steady precip arrives in Boston-likely rain at this point. Temp 36. NE wind increasing.

Midnight- 4AM: Rain will likely change to heavy, wet snow in Boston. Temp 34. This is when Boston will pick up most of the snow amounts. NE wind of 20-30 MPH with gusts to 45 MPH.

5 AM- 8AM: Snow may change back to rain in Boston-a tough call. Temps around 35. Strong NE wind continues

9AM: Rain changes to snow showers before ending around noon. Wind shifts to NW with gusts past 40 MPH. Temps fall to 32.

Snow Amounts: Inches

2-4: The Boston area inside route 128. About 3 inches in JP. This could still change so stay tuned for more updates. Over a foot of snow is possible NW of Worcester-including here at PSU.

Note: Stay tuned for an update Thursday afternoon if the forecast changes. Feel free to ask for snow amounts outside route 128 if you live there.

April Fool's Blizzard?

I was only 5 when we had a big blizzard on April 1, 1997 and Boston got 2 FEET of snow. I don't remember the storm too well, but anyone who lived in JP at that time and is older I'm pretty sure remembers. Now, I am not forecasting a repeat of that storm. However, a powerful Nor'easter is expected at this time. A very strong storm will pass SE of Nantucket on Friday giving us heavy precip and gale force winds. The big question at this time how will most of the precip fall during the day on Friday. At this point most models are suggesting A MAINLY WET SNOW EVENT with a plowable snow possible (6+), even close to Boston. This would create many power outages all over New England. However, with water temps around 40 along the waters edge we would need a wind more to the north than NE to keep the mix away. At this point I think that winds will stay more northerly keeping it mainly snow, except on the South shore and points SE where rain will mix in. But just a slight shift in the atmosphere Boston could have more a wind off the water-cutting snow totals down quite a bit compared to just a little inland.

Boston, MA forecast:

Tonight: Clear with lows in the 20's.

Wednesday: Mostly Sunny with highs around 50. NE wind of 10-15 MPH.

Wednesday night: Increasing clouds with lows around 30.

Thursday: Cloudy and cooler with highs in the low 40's.

Thursday night: Cloudy with precip arriving around dawn. Lows around freezing. Stay tuned for a timeline tomorrow.

April Fool's Day: A powerful nor'easter may give a major winter storm and gale force winds to most of the area. Highs around freezing. I will give my snow amounts tomorrow. Stay tuned for more updates!

Tsunami!

-The first photo shows wave heights across the Pacific. This shows waves over 25 FT that hit Japan.

Waves over 30 FEET slammed ashore just after the quake, causing homes and cars to be dragged miles inland. Over 300 people have been killed in the city closest to the quake, and more deaths are being reported closer to the capital. Minor damage along with swaying buildings in Tokyo were reported, but they avoided a disaster. The Tsunami raced across the Pacific, leading to additional TSUNAMI WARNINGS in Hawaii. Waves as high as 7 FT hit the Hawaiian islands and caused minor damage right at the beaches. Then, a 8 FT wave hit northern CA, causing docks to be damaged and boats to be torn apart. However, no major damage has been reported along the US west coast so far. Over the last few hours over 100 after shocks have been reported, including one higher than a 7.0. Ice Jam

Heavy rain here in Plymouth, NH combined with snowmelt created a big jam in the local river. A flood emergency was issued and students had to move their cars. Also, roads were closed and some people may have to be evacuated. The heavy snow stayed north of PSU, where over 2 FEET fell in some places. In the Boston area, some rivers are above flood stage-but major flooding should be avoided for the next few days. The next rainstorm will arrive late Thursday, and flooding again could be an issue.
