Snow Squalls

A strong arctic front will cross the region on Thursday afternoon bringing the threat of snow squalls. A snow squall is just like a thunderstorm in the summer. Not every town will see one, but the ones who do will get strong winds and near whiteout conditions for a brief period of time. The squalls may put down a quick inch or 2 in less than an hour. These squalls are possible anytime after 3 PM. Friday will be frigid with temps not reaching 20, and with the wind gusting to 40 MPH it will feel at or below 0 all day! The potential nor'easter for Saturday is a miss at this point.

Boston, MA forecast:

Tonight: Clear, lows near 30 in Boston, 27 in JP and 24 in the suburbs.

Thursday: Sunny early, then cloudy with snow squalls likely after 3 PM. Highs near 35. SW wind of 10-15 MPH with gusts to 30 MPH.

Thursday night: A chance of a snow squall before 9 PM, then rapid clearing and turning windy. Lows in the low to mid teens. NW wind gusting over 30 MPH.

Friday: Bright and sunny, but very cold. Highs in the upper teens. NW wind gusting to 40 MPH. Wind chill values as low as 10 below in the morning, and not getting far above 0 all day.

Saturday: A mix of sun and clouds as the storm likely heads out sea. Still cold, highs in the mid 20's. Wind chill values as low as 15 below in the morning.

Sunday: Partly cloudy, highs in the mid 20's.

  1. Great to have Saturday's weather spelled out for the Franklin Park Winter Volunteer Day - 72 people are signed up - they're going to freeze their toes off (me too!)

I have an upcoming weather question. Our winter snow festival in Franklin Park is scheduled for Saturday, February 13th. Last year at the same time we had several inches of snow on the ground and temps of 40 - it was perfect for sledding, cross country skiing, finding animal tracks, trying out snowshoes, and building a neighborhood of snow people! This year - will we get more snow by then? What do you think? We don't want to cancel!

  2. I do think there will be snow on the ground for the festival. It will be cold for a while, and we will have a chance at a couple of storms. I hope people show up on Saturday, what time are you expecting people to come?
